Dodgers Pay Tribute to Fernando Valenzuela with No. 34 Patch in World Series

Dodgers to wear No. 34 patch in tribute to Fernando Valenzuela during World Series

The Los Angeles Dodgers will sport a patch in memory of the late Fernando Valenzuela throughout the 2024 World Series and the 2025 season, as announced by the team on Thursday.

Fernando Valenzuela, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 63, was awarded the NL Cy Young Award and played a pivotal role in leading the Dodgers to a World Series victory in 1981. Originally from Mexico, Valenzuela had an extraordinary season that initiated “Fernandomania” in Los Angeles, helping the team secure its first championship since 1965. Over his career, he pitched for 17 seasons in the major leagues and was selected to the All-Star team six times.

The patch will display Valenzuela’s No. 34, which was retired by the organization in 2023, and it will make its first appearance during Game 1 of the World Series at Dodger Stadium on Friday.

  • VALENZUELA: Though he may be gone, the spirit of Fernandomania will endure.
  • LOS ANGELES: Valenzuela left an impactful legacy at Chavez Ravine following the previous displacement of residents.

Stan Kasten, the CEO and president of the Dodgers, expressed in a statement, “He is among the most pivotal Dodgers in history and rightfully deserves a place on the Mount Rushmore of our franchise heroes. His outstanding performance during the 1981 season helped bring our community together, and he has held a special place in our hearts ever since—as both a player and an announcer. His passing is a great loss for us all.”
