Donald Trump Discusses Substance Use with Comedian Theo Von

During an engaging discussion on Theo Von’s podcast, former President Donald Trump inquired about Von’s experiences with cocaine, alcohol, and addiction.

The recent episode of “This Past Weekend” was released on Tuesday and recorded at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.

In the episode, Von asked Trump about his choice to abstain from drinking and smoking. Trump explained that he has never engaged in either, attributing his stance to the struggles faced by his late brother, Fred Trump Jr., who had issues with alcohol.

“I always tell people: no drugs, no drinking, no cigarettes,” Trump stated. He emphasized this message repeatedly to his children.

Trump expressed admiration for his brother, who passed away in 1981, describing him as an “incredible personality.” He also noted that he has heard that alcohol addiction can be more difficult to overcome than drug addiction. Von, who is in recovery, confirmed his own struggles with substance use.

The former president covered a variety of topics beyond substance use, including his family, healthcare, lobbying efforts, the current administration, and his campaigning for the 2024 presidential election.

Key Topics from the Conversation

While addressing the opioid crisis, Von shared his past experience with cocaine.

“That’s pretty extreme, right?” Trump responded, to which Von affirmed that he has stopped using cocaine.

Trump proceeded to ask Von if cocaine offered a “bigger high” compared to alcohol, remarking, “So you’re flying high on cocaine, more than from anything else?”

“Cocaine makes you feel like a nocturnal creature, man, you know what I mean?” Von replied, humorously suggesting that it makes one feel alert and disoriented.

When Trump inquired whether that high felt enjoyable, Von answered, “Not really, it’s terrible, but you push through it, similar to how you might feel about scotch,” referencing their earlier discussion on alcohol.

Trump then posed a question to Von about which issue he believed was a bigger concern in the U.S. today: alcohol or opioids. Von chose opioids as the more pressing problem.
