Rookie Drake Maye Named As New Starting Quarterback for Patriots, Reports Indicate

New England is set to see a change at the quarterback position.

According to various reports, the Patriots will have rookie Drake Maye as their starting quarterback in the upcoming Week 6 game against the Houston Texans.

Selected as the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, Maye will take over from Jacoby Brissett, who has faced difficulties in recent games. Brissett, 31, was established as the starting quarterback at the season’s outset, despite head coach Jerod Mayo acknowledging that Maye had outperformed him during the preseason.

After a successful start to the season, the Patriots have since lost four straight matches, struggling to generate points. In their last three games, the team has not surpassed 13 points in any of them, ranking second-to-last in the league with a scoring average of 12.4 points per game, just ahead of the Miami Dolphins, who defeated New England in Week 5.

Brissett has had a tough season overall. The Patriots’ passing game ranks last in the league, averaging only 119.4 yards per game. He has achieved 696 passing yards this season, with two touchdowns and one interception.

Mayo stated after the Week 5 loss, “I believe we performed well enough on defense and special teams to win. As the quarterback, Brissett knows he gets the ball every play, and we just didn’t score enough points to win.”

This season, Maye has played once, stepping in as a substitute during a loss to the New York Jets in Week 3. In that game, he completed four of eight passes for a total of 22 yards.

With Maye getting the start, he becomes the fourth rookie quarterback to kick off this season, joining Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Bo Nix.
