Commanders vs. Eagles recap: Philadelphia secures sixth consecutive victory
The Philadelphia Eagles soared to the top of the NFC East with a 26-18 win against the Washington Commanders.
While the game wasn’t particularly stylish, Philadelphia managed to secure the win, improving their record to 8-2 for the season. The Commanders fell to 7-4, and their ambitions for a division title are beginning to look uncertain. Rather than a contest for first place, Thursday’s matchup felt reminiscent of the “NFC Least” days.
Star running back Saquon Barkley had an impressive performance, rushing for 146 yards and scoring two touchdowns, just missing out on a third. It’s clear that the Eagles’ success heavily relies on Barkley’s contributions. As they head into the playoff stretch, these Eagles will need to step up their game to make a significant impact in January and possibly February.
The up-and-coming Commanders struggled during the game but managed to show resilience against a superior team. Although progress takes time, Washington is making strides in a challenging environment.
Here’s a summary of the game highlights:
Commanders vs. Eagles highlights
Final Score: Eagles 26, Commanders 18
Commanders’ onside kick attempt unsuccessful
Zane Gonzalez’s attempt was easily thwarted, allowing Dallas Goedert to recover the kick. The game is practically over, and the Eagles will run down the clock to maintain their lead in the NFC East.
Update: Ertz keeps Washington in the game
Though close to the end, Washington’s Zach Ertz scored against his former team and secured a two-point conversion, narrowing the Eagles’ lead to eight points. With only 28 seconds left, Washington will need to recover an onside kick to have a chance. Eagles 26, Commanders 18.
Update: Barkley seals the game with another touchdown
In a quick succession, Barkley added his second touchdown with an impressive 39-yard run, essentially sealing the fate for Washington. Eagles 26, Commanders 10.
Interception by Reed Blankenship
The Commanders’ situation worsened as Jayden Daniels threw an interception that Blankenship easily picked off. Philadelphia can now manage the game comfortably.
Update: Barkley scores again for Eagles
Barkley’s 23-yard touchdown run brought Philadelphia’s lead to 19-10 with just under five minutes remaining. A key 31-yard catch by Dallas Goedert set up the score. Following Washington’s unsuccessful fourth down attempt, they now face an uphill battle. Eagles 19, Commanders 10.
Commanders go for it on fourth down but fail
Washington made a bold decision to attempt a fourth down conversion to gain the lead, but the play was disrupted, forcing Daniels out of bounds.
Update: Eagles take the lead late in the game
Jalen Hurts led the Eagles to their first touchdown of the game with 12 minutes left in the fourth, executing their signature “Brotherly Shove” play. However, Jake Elliott missed the extra point, a potential mistake that could prompt worry later. Eagles 12, Commanders 10.
End of third quarter: Commanders ahead
The fast-paced quarter concludes without scoring changes with the Commanders holding a four-point lead while the Eagles’ offense remains inconsistent.
Update: Elliott scores a field goal for Eagles
The Eagles’ offense struggled again, and after a decent 74-yard drive, they settled for a field goal by Jake Elliott, who successfully kicked a 31-yarder. Despite a significant catch and run by Barkley, the drive didn’t produce a touchdown. Commanders 10, Eagles 6.
Update: Washington extends their lead
Washington started the second half strong, capped off by a 45-yard field goal from Gonzalez. Commanders 10, Eagles 3.
Jalen Hurts injury news
The first half was challenging for the Philadelphia Eagles and ended with a concerning injury for Hurts.
Despite dominating possession and almost doubling the plays compared to Washington, the Eagles found themselves trailing the Commanders 7-3 at halftime. The sight of Hurts in the medical tent caused concern among fans.
Fortunately, Hurts was able to run off the field at halftime and was cleared to play after a concussion assessment.
Update: Eagles close the gap on Commanders
The teams went back and forth punting during most of the second quarter until the Eagles finally made a move to intensify their efforts. While NFL experts might appreciate the punting efforts of Tress Way and Braden Mann, it’s less likely that viewers tuned into Prime Video for that excitement.
Watch as the punter battle unfolds.
Regardless, Philadelphia has finally gotten on the scoreboard thanks to Jake Elliott’s field goal. He successfully kicked a 21-yarder, whichwas crucial to avoid the disapproving boos from the Philadelphia crowd had he missed a third attempt in the first half. The Eagles brought the ball to Washington’s 3-yard line but couldn’t make it into the end zone. Commanders 7, Eagles 3
Jake Elliott’s Performance
Elliott has proven to be an effective kicker for the Eagles, even managing to make a few 60-yard field goals over his career. However, distance has been a challenge for him this season, as he has attempted four field goals from 50 yards or longer but missed all of them. This situation creates difficulties for the Philadelphia offense, which can’t rely on its kicker for long-range success. Elliott, much like a basketball player, needs to see a successful kick to regain his confidence.
Eagles Fall Short Again; Elliott Misses Another Kick
It’s becoming a recurring issue for the Eagles, who once again failed to capitalize on advantageous field position. Jake Elliott missed another opportunity, this time from 51 yards. Philadelphia attempted a trick play, but Frankie Luvu saw through it and tackled Jalen Hurts for a significant loss. Now, Washington has the chance to improve its lead with good field position.
First Quarter Wrap: Commanders in the Lead
The Eagles dominated possession and ran twice as many plays as the Commanders during the first quarter. However, they have nothing to show for it, trailing 7-0. As play resumes, they have the ball at Washington’s 41-yard line.
Score Update: Commanders Take the Lead with Brian Robinson Jr.’s Touchdown
Washington’s initial drive ended quickly with a punt, but their second drive was much more effective, taking only two minutes and resulting in a touchdown. Brian Robinson Jr. capped the drive with a 1-yard rushing touchdown. The success was largely thanks to the running backs, with Austin Ekeler’s 34-yard catch-and-run setting up the score and Robinson’s 18-yard run getting them to the goal line.
Washington leads 7-0.
Saquon Barkley Surpasses 1,000 Rushing Yards
The star running back continues to shine, achieving over 1,000 rushing yards with an 8-yard carry on this drive. He fell short last season with 1,312 yards, battling injuries and ineffective offenses throughout his career. Now, he appears to have regained his elite form in Philadelphia.
Barkley’s next goal is to reach 2,000 scrimmage yards, a milestone he hasn’t hit since his rookie year in 2018. With seven games remaining, he has a solid chance of achieving this mark once again.
Commanders Struggle with a Quick Three-and-Out
Washington received a break after Elliott’s missed kick but failed to capitalize on it, going three-and-out within a minute and allowing Jalen Hurts and the Eagles to regain possession.
Eagles’ First Drive Ends Empty as Elliott Misses Again
Philadelphia’s initial drive showed promise, highlighted by a 32-yard catch-and-run from A.J. Brown. However, a crucial penalty halted their momentum, forcing them to attempt a field goal. Sadly, Jake Elliott’s 44-yard kick went wide left, leaving the score at zero with five minutes played.
Injury Update: Eagles Guard Landon Dickerson Exits
Just over a minute into the game, an injury was reported: Eagles left guard Landon Dickerson was injured after getting rolled up on during a Saquon Barkley run. He limped off the field, and Tyler Steen replaced him.
