Eagles guitarist Steuart Smith steps down following Parkinson’s diagnosis
This year’s Eagles live performance will have a new look.
After the iconic band kicked off their latest show at the Las Vegas Sphere earlier this month, fans noticed that guitarist Steuart Smith was missing. Filling in for him was singer-songwriter Chris Holt.
Smith, who has been with the “Hotel California” rockers since 2001, is temporarily stepping down while he copes with a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. “It is with deep sadness that I must step back from my role with the Eagles due to performance challenges linked to my recent diagnosis of Parkinsonism, and I wish to do so with dignity,” Smith shared in a statement released to YSL News on Monday.
Parkinsonism refers to a degenerative brain condition related to age that is not curable, according to the Cleveland Clinic. As the condition progresses, it can impair muscle control, balance, and movement — critical skills for someone in the touring music scene.
“It’s been an incredible 25 years, and I had hoped to wrap up this year with the band, but now I need to prioritize what’s best for everyone involved,” his statement noted.
Holt will step in as the new guitarist, as announced by his record label, Idol Records, in a statement on Friday. Along with Holt’s involvement in the Vegas shows, the announcement hinted at his forthcoming album titled “Across The Milky Way,” aimed for release in early summer.
“Steuart Smith has retired from touring,” Don Henley, one of the founding members of the band and its current drummer and vocalist, confirmed in the statement. “We are forever thankful for the incredible talents he contributed to our recordings and performances. He will be missed greatly, but he will always remain part of our musical family. We know our numerous fans join us in wishing him the best.”
In an interview with the Dallas Morning News, Holt recognized the significant legacy he is stepping into.
“I’m stepping into the enormous legacy left by the three guitarists before me,” Holt remarked. Previously, Eagles guitarists included not just Smith, but also Don Felder and Bernie Leadon. “In my opinion, it’s some of the most beautiful guitar work ever recorded. It’s a tremendous honor for me to take on this role, and I have a responsibility to get it right.”
