Edison Reports Surge in Power Line Activity Linked to Eaton Fire

Southern California Edison reports power lines experienced a surge in current on Eaton Fire day

Southern California Edison, a subsidiary of Edison International, announced on Monday that an initial examination of data indicated a “brief and anticipated rise in current” on its active lines in the Eaton Canyon area during the evening of January 7.

Fire officials have yet to determine Southern California Edison as the cause of the fires in Los Angeles. Nonetheless, the company’s infrastructure is under scrutiny, and it faces multiple lawsuits claiming that its equipment ignited the devastating Eaton fire.

This latest statement from the utility follows a New York Times article that featured new video evidence showing electrical arcing and analysis suggesting Edison’s equipment may have been involved in starting the fire. The company stated it is currently reviewing this footage.

Previously, Southern California Edison noted that it did not detect any faults in the transmission lines until more than an hour after the Eaton fire began.

In a letter submitted to the California Public Utilities Commission, the utility insisted that the current increase was within acceptable design limits and did not activate safety systems on those lines.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department, which is leading the inquiry into the Eaton fire’s origin, has pinpointed a preliminary origin area and requested that the utility maintain its transmission facilities intact near the location.

Since the fire started on January 7, it has charred 14,021 acres east of Los Angeles, destroyed 9,418 structures, damaged 1,073 others, and resulted in 17 fatalities. As of Monday, it was reported to be 99% contained by California’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Southern California Edison stated it is cooperating with investigators’ requests and has gathered evidence from Eaton Canyon, which includes metal fragments and materials found near its towers, as well as items from a camp situated about 300 yards downhill from the structures.

“While the investigation continues, this update and supporting evidence strongly indicate that SCE equipment was likely the ignition source of the Eaton Fire,” analysts from Jefferies noted in a report.

Shares of Edison International were trading 1.8% lower in late afternoon trading.
