Elle Macpherson Opens Up About Her Breast Cancer Fight and Her Controversial Decision Against Chemotherapy

Elle Macpherson opens up about her experience with breast cancer, refusing chemotherapy: ‘People thought I was crazy’

Elle Macpherson has shared details about her private struggle with breast cancer.

The 60-year-old model disclosed in an interview with Australian Women’s Weekly, published on Monday, that she received a breast cancer diagnosis seven years ago. Macpherson noted that her physician recommended mastectomy along with radiation, chemotherapy, and hormone therapy.

Nonetheless, she opted out of chemotherapy and instead chose an “intuitive, heart-led, holistic approach” to her recovery. This path included a solitary eight-month retreat in Arizona, where she dedicated herself to “healing,” she remarked.

“It was shocking, unexpected, and overwhelming in many ways,” she explained to the magazine. “It pushed me to search within myself deeply to discover a solution that was right for me. I came to realize that I needed my own truth and belief system to guide me through this journey. And that’s exactly what I did.”

Macpherson detailed her cancer journey in her upcoming book “Elle,” set to launch in the U.S. this November. She writes, “Choosing to refuse standard medical treatments was the toughest decision I have ever faced. Yet, disregarding my own inner feelings would have been even more challenging.”

Chemotherapy is a well-established treatment known for targeting cancer cells, often leading to complete elimination of cancer or improving the quality of life by alleviating symptoms, according to the Cleveland Clinic. They acknowledge that while chemotherapy has been a staple for decades, its side effects can include fatigue and hair loss, and it may enhance the effectiveness of other treatments like surgery or radiation therapy.

“Many believed I was making a foolish decision, but I recognized the necessity of choosing a path that resonated with my inner self,” Macpherson stated. “It involved addressing both the emotional and physical aspects of breast cancer—something that required immense courage and introspection.”

She also mentioned that her son Flynn was quite “concerned about my choice,” and that her former partner Arki Busson deemed her decision “extreme,” though he expressed pride in her “bravery.” On the other hand, her son Cy was supportive of her choice to forgo chemotherapy.

This marks the first time Macpherson has publicly discussed her cancer journey, and she revealed to the magazine that she is currently in “clinical remission.” She hopes to inspire others to “trust their instincts in their decisions, whether in times of crisis or in everyday life.”

This year, Macpherson joins a list of celebrities who have opened up about their breast cancer experiences. Recently, “Boy Meets World” star Danielle Fishel revealed her diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ, a non-invasive form of breast cancer, stating on her “Pod Meets World” podcast that she would be undergoing surgery.

“I only discovered this cancer at stage zero because I promptly scheduled my yearly mammogram after receiving a reminder.” She explained, “They caught it so early that I’m going to be perfectly fine. I want to share this to encourage everyone to keep up with their health checkups.”

In March, Olivia Munn also spoke about her private battle with breast cancer and having undergone a double mastectomy.

“I’m fortunate,” Munn remarked during her discussion. “We detected it early enough to present various options. I want the same for every woman facing this challenge one day.”
