Ellen Degeneres reveals ‘final comedy special of her career’ on Netflix
Ellen DeGeneres is announcing her farewell, as she prepares to present the “last comedy special of her career.”
The comedian is returning to Netflix for her special titled “Ellen Degeneres: For Your Approval,” following her 2018 special “Relatable.”
This year, the former talk show host embarked on Ellen’s Last Stand…Up Tour, concluding last month. The tour came after her step back from the limelight following a July 2020 Buzzfeed News piece that aired employee allegations of racism, intimidation, and fear while working on her show.
According to a press release, “In this last comedy special of her significant career, Ellen opens up about what she’s been doing since being ‘kicked out of show business.’ From the simple life of raising chickens and parallel parking to the stark truth of being a brand name celebrity, she dives deep into her comedy roots and delivers laughs about life’s real and absurd experiences.”
Degeneres has remarked about the comedy special: “To answer what everyone is wondering — Yes, I will discuss it. Yes, this is my final special. Yes, Portia really does look that beautiful in real life.”
When launching her tour, DeGeneres took the chance to confront the unspoken issues, as noted by Rolling Stone and People.
“We were just keeping a low profile for a while,” she commented about herself and her wife, Portia de Rossi, according to the publications.
Reflecting on the negative reactions post-Buzzfeed report, DeGeneres admitted: “The ‘be kind’ persona wasn’t kind. I became this flat character who gave things away and danced my way up the stairs.”
She later talked about concluding the show amidst the backlash in May 2022, after 19 years of broadcasting.
“I joke about what I experienced, but it was truly devastating,” she stated. “I loathed how the show concluded. I loved that show immensely and was upset that my final appearance was that way.”
What transpired on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ in 2020?
Buzzfeed News highlighted that numerous former staff members pointed fingers at executive producers and upper management for the “everyday toxicity.” Meanwhile, one past employee expressed that DeGeneres “needs to assume more responsibility.”
Some employees claimed they were let go after taking medical leave or bereavement days for funerals, and one individual recounted experiences of racist remarks, actions, and microaggressions.
Upon her return to the show following the shocking report, DeGeneres told the audience, “I discovered that occurrences took place here that should never have happened. I take this very seriously, and I sincerely apologize to those who were impacted.”
She further stated, “I acknowledge that I hold a position of privilege and power, and I understand that with that comes accountability, which I accept for whatever transpires at my show.”
In a 2020 statement to YSL News, executive producers Ed Glavin, Mary Connelly, and Andy Lassner expressed their “deep sadness” over the allegations. A month following the report, executive producers Glavin, Kevin Leman, and Jonathan Norman were removed from the talk show.
