Elon Musk deploys Tesla Cybertrucks in Los Angeles amid ongoing wildfires
LOS ANGELES − Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk is dispatching Cybertrucks to serve as battery reserves and internet hubs in regions struggling with the wildfires affecting Los Angeles, as the Tesla CEO shared on X, a social media site he owns, on Sunday.
A post from the Altadena Mountain Rescue Team indicates that these trucks started arriving as early as Saturday and are being utilized as power sources at the Altadena station of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Musk announced that additional Cybertrucks will be sent to the Los Angeles region, where fires have scorched over 40,000 acres and claimed at least 24 lives.
“I apologize to everyone awaiting Cybertruck deliveries in California over the coming days,” Musk stated on X. “We need to repurpose these vehicles as mobile bases to supply electricity to Starlink Internet terminals in parts of LA that lack connectivity.”
Starlink’s free service comes with conditions
On Thursday, Musk’s Starlink service revealed it would be offering complimentary access for residents impacted by the wildfires.
While it’s advertised as “free,” those wanting to sign up who don’t already own a dish are required to buy Starlink equipment for approximately $350.
According to the company’s website, “starting February 10th, (Starlink) will transition (customers) to a paid Residential subscription.”
The technology news outlet The Register has reported that this offer from Starlink following Hurricane Helene closely mirrors the typical 30-day trial extended to new residential customers.
