Elon Musk’s Eye-Popping $1 Million Daily Disbursements at Trump Rally Spark Legal Scrutiny

Elon Musk’s Daily $1 Million Donations at Trump Rally Raise Legal Concerns

Billionaire Elon Musk announced on Saturday that he will be giving away $1 million each day until the upcoming election in November to individuals who sign his online petition. The first prize was given at an event organized by a PAC supporting Republican Donald Trump, raising significant legal questions about the nature of these payments.

At the America PAC event in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Musk awarded a $1 million check to an attendee named John Dreher, as stated by event staff.

“By the way, John had no idea. So anyway, you’re welcome,” exclaimed the CEO of Tesla as he presented Dreher with the check.

This money is another instance of Musk leveraging his vast wealth to sway the highly competitive presidential election between Trump and his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris.

Musk established America PAC, a political action committee created to back Trump’s campaign. The organization aims to mobilize and register voters in crucial states, though there are indications that it may struggle to achieve its objectives.

‘Deeply Concerning’

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed concern on Sunday during NBC’s “Meet the Press,” stating that Musk’s initiative to distribute money to registered voters in Pennsylvania is “deeply concerning” and may warrant investigation by law enforcement.

On Saturday night, various election law experts raised legal issues surrounding these cash giveaways, pointing to multiple provisions in federal law that forbid direct payments to voters.

It is illegal under federal law to pay individuals with the intent to encourage or reward their voting behavior or registration, and this violation can lead to imprisonment. This ban extends beyond cash to anything of monetary value, including alcohol or lottery tickets, as outlined in a Justice Department manual on election crimes.

The event in Harrisburg was the third in just as many days in Pennsylvania, where Musk has been framing the upcoming election in stark terms and urging supporters to vote early and encourage others to vote as well.

During the event, he pointed out that if Harris were to win, it would mark “the last election.”

He also remarked that the two assassination attempts on Trump demonstrate that the former president is challenging the established order.

The petition that Musk is promoting states: “The First and Second Amendments guarantee freedom of speech and the right to bear arms. By signing below, I am pledging my support for the First and Second Amendments.”

Attendees at the event were required to sign the petition, which enables America PAC to collect contact information from potential voters that they can engage to support Trump.

Musk, identified by Forbes as the richest person in the world, has so far contributed at least $75 million to America PAC according to federal disclosures, making it a vital entity in Trump’s effort to reclaim the presidency.

The entrepreneur, who leads Tesla and the rocket and satellite company SpaceX, has increasingly backed Republican initiatives and has become a vocal supporter of Trump this year.

In response, Trump has indicated that he would appoint Musk to oversee a government efficiency commission if he is elected.
