Bumpy Arrival: Alaska Airlines Flight Touches Down at LAX Following Tire Loss
An Alaska Airlines plane experienced a difficult landing at Los Angeles on Thursday night after losing a tire during takeoff from Washington D.C.
Flight 309 took off from Dulles International Airport just before 5:30 p.m. and landed safely at Los Angeles International Airport shortly after 8 p.m., as reported by FlightAware, which tracks flight routes.
An Alaska Airlines spokesperson stated that the Boeing 737-900 was carrying 175 passengers and six crew members, with initial reports suggesting that the aircraft experienced “a main gear tire failure.”
“To ensure safety during landing at LAX, our pilots declared an emergency to have additional support available if necessary,” the spokesperson informed YSL News on Friday morning.
‘Ten Seconds of Intense Turbulence’
“They instructed us to get into the brace position,” said passenger Brent Drewette from San Juan Capistrano, California. “There were ten seconds of very violent shaking. But then emergency teams attended to us, and everything was okay.”
The airline confirmed that the landing was safe and no injuries were reported.
On the flight was a group of middle school students traveling from Orange County, California, KABC noted.
“I had to stay calm for my daughter,” said passenger Allison Mueller. “I was really scared.”
“While such incidents are uncommon, our flight crews undergo extensive training to handle various situations safely,” the airline spokesperson remarked. “We recognize that this was likely a distressing experience for our passengers, and we sincerely apologize for what they went through.”
The aircraft will be temporarily taken out of service while the situation is investigated, as reported by the airline.
