Emma Roberts Celebrates the Joy of Storytime with Her Son and Her Love for Joan Didion

Emma Roberts shares her love for reading with her son and revisits a favorite Joan Didion book

When she’s off the set, Emma Roberts enjoys losing herself in a good book, particularly while abroad.

“I find myself daydreaming about my summer plans,” shares Roberts, who started the Belletrist Book Club with her close friend Karah Preiss in 2017. “Nothing feels more romantic than reading while traveling by train.”

And what could be more magical than reading in the enchanting city of Paris?

This summer, Roberts, who is collaborating with the Europe-focused booking app Trainline to unveil The Reading Route, reflects fondly on one of her cherished memories: her journey through Paris where she accomplished her summer reading goals and enjoyed quality time with her mother.

The actress known for “American Horror Story” and “Scream Queens” is among a growing list of celebrities creating online reading communities such as Dua Lipa’s Service95, Emma Watson’s Our Shared Shelf, Florence Welch’s Between Two Books, and Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine.

On Instagram, the “Madame Web” star maintains her book-loving image by sharing her book club’s August selection (“Five-Star Stranger” by Kat Tang), sporting a “bookworm” T-shirt, highlighting her favorite independent bookstores, and showcasing her book purchases.

However, Roberts isn’t quite ready to embark on her journey as a published author just yet.

“You may hear from me in the far future,” she humorously remarks. “I think I’ll publish something when I’m a bit older and hopefully wiser.”

Emma Roberts’ essentials for vacations include a book, pen, and sunglasses

Whenever she travels, Roberts makes sure to bring along “at least one incredible book or three” — no exceptions.

“I always bring more books than I can manage to read since my mood may shift, so I need to have some options or a list of delightful bookstores to explore while I’m there,” she explains. “I also never forget a pen because I can’t read without underlining or jotting notes.”

While some bibliophiles may feel uncomfortable marking or dog-earing pages, Roberts considers it a useful way to recall her feelings during specific reads.

She mentions that she takes notes about her age while reading, her location, and the dates she starts and finishes books. “This way, I have a reference point for why certain parts of the book resonated with me at that time,” she explains.

Other items on Roberts’ travel checklist include Evian facial spray, a stylish pair of sunglasses, Kiko Milano eye patches, along with her book and pen.

“With that, you’re pretty much set for a trip,” she adds. “That’s the bare minimum.”

Reading with her son brings her immense joy

Roberts also shares her passion for reading with her 3-year-old son, Rhodes Robert Hedlund.

“Reading with my son is truly one of my greatest pleasures in life,” she expresses. “Just the other night, he read ‘Good Night Moon’ to me, and I was all teared up; it was such a beautiful moment.”

“I can see the pride he feels when he reads a book on his own,” she adds, noting that Rhodes “is excited about reading and loves sounding out words. He is eager to learn how to read independently, which gives me so much happiness.”

Recently, the actress has also found joy in her engagement to her partner, Cody John.

How does the busy actress carve out time to read?

Emma Roberts, who has six acting projects lined up, manages to incorporate reading into her busy schedule.

“I’m lucky that I can sleep and read wherever I am,” she jokes. “I always keep a book with me on set and read a little bit before I go to sleep.”

While filming, she selects reads that are relevant to her character. “I tend to stick with the genre,” Roberts explains. “During the latest season of ‘AHS,’ I read a lot of horror novels.”

She enjoyed reading “Rosemary’s Baby” and its sequel “Son of Rosemary,” using vintage copies she found on Etsy, which enhanced the experience of reading them.

Emma Roberts’s cherished memories as a young book lover

Roberts admits she struggled with math and science (and still does) but loved immersing herself in books. “I always excelled in spelling and English as a child.”

On a deeper note, she shares that reading instilled a strong sense of confidence that has followed her into adulthood.

“It gave me the assurance that I was skilled in something, and I just couldn’t get enough of spending time in the school library or visiting bookstores after classes. I would read everything I could get my hands on and use my allowance to buy new books.”

Why she cherishes a particular Joan Didion book

Becoming a mother has transformed Roberts’s perspective on reading.

Joan Didion’s “Blue Nights,” published in 2012, is one of the titles that resonates deeply with her now. It reflects on grief as Didion processes the death of her daughter, Quintana Roo.

“Its meaning shifted for me after I became a mother,” she reveals. “Since it’s about her daughter, it holds a different significance for me now.”

However, Roberts’s ultimate treasure is her signed edition of Didion’s 1968 essay collection, “Slouching Towards Bethlehem,” which was a gift for her 30th birthday. “It’s one of my most cherished items.”

“Recently, I treated myself to a copy of ‘The Bell Jar’ by Victoria Lucas, which is the pseudonym that Sylvia Plath used for its first publication. That was a significant splurge for me I’ve been contemplating for a while.”
