Eric Roberts criticizes Julia Roberts in ‘Steel Magnolias,’ insists he’s not ‘envious’: Reports
Eric Roberts is in the news once more regarding his relationship with sister Julia Roberts, following his critique of her performance in the 1989 film “Steel Magnolias,” according to various reports.
His remarks appear in his recent book, “Runaway Train: Or, The Story of My Life So Far,” released earlier this month, which touches upon their rumored sibling rivalry in Hollywood.
“Julia was fine in ‘Mystic Pizza,’ excellent in ‘Pretty Woman,’ but I don’t think she was as strong in ‘Steel Magnolias,’ even though that role earned her first Academy Award nomination,” he stated, as reported by Entertainment Weekly and The Independent. “I don’t mean to come off as an envious brother or an actor critiquing, but I feel her performance in that movie didn’t quite stand the test of time.”
He mentioned that he saw his sister as “almost a good actor” in that movie and took a jab at her impressive cast of co-stars.
“Watching her in ‘Steel Magnolias,’ I thought, ‘Okay. Good. She’s nearly a great actor, and one day she will be,'” he remarked. However, he felt that “all those talented actresses” — including Sally Field, Dolly Parton, the late Olympia Dukakis, Shirley MacLaine, and Daryl Hannah — “overacted” in the film.
He elaborated further, stating “no one was really impressive in that movie,” explaining that “they all overplayed their parts, and we all know that if an actor cries on camera, they reach higher acclaim. Crying tends to get lots of recognition. It’s a running joke in acting classes.”
A spokesperson for Roberts informed Fox News Digital that “Eric deeply regrets his comments regarding the performances in ‘Steel Magnolias.’ In fact, in the audiobook version, he expresses his feelings on this matter in a much different way. It’s worth noting that this film does not align with Eric’s typical tastes, as he generally prefers political thrillers.
“He might have sensed a degree of melodrama in it. Nonetheless, Eric stands quite alone in highlighting any faults in the amazing ‘Steel Magnolias.’ After viewing the film again, he honestly couldn’t understand his previous assessment. Perhaps the emotional weight of some aspects of the story was overwhelming for him at that time, and many of our reactions can be subconscious, both towards individuals and the art they create,” the statement continued. “YSL News” has reached out for comments from representatives of both Eric and Julia Roberts.
Eric Roberts had previously expressed a ‘public apology’ to Julia Roberts, saying he can’t discuss her or daughter Emma Roberts
As reported by People, the “Dark Knight” actor also offered what he describes as a “public apology” in “Runaway Train,” which shares a title with the 1985 film that garnered him both Golden Globe and Oscar nominations.
He also shares insight into how his struggles with drugs, a serious car accident in 1981, and subsequent coma affected his memory. It was during this period that Julia Roberts rose to fame, which led Eric to previously remark, “If it weren’t for me, there would be no Julia Roberts.”
“I hope Julia can accept this public apology,” Eric Roberts, now 68, wrote, according to People. “It was a foolish statement to have made.”
As the father of Emma Roberts, known for her role in “Scream Queens,” Eric remained tight-lipped about his famous family during an April appearance on the “Still Here Hollywood” podcast. When host Steve Kmetko asked about his sister’s wellbeing, the “Dark Knight” actor replied, “You’ll have to ask her.”
“I love my sister, but I can’t discuss her. She prefers it that way,” Roberts, 68, explained. “My daughter has also asked me not to speak about her, and yet I sometimes do. I’m not supposed to discuss either of them, but I occasionally slip up.”
Eric Roberts is a current participant in Season 33 of ‘Dancing with the Stars’
Currently, Roberts is part of the cast for Season 33 of “Dancing with the Stars,” paired with professional dancer Britt Stewart. The duo managed to avoid elimination during Tuesday night’s episode, despite having received the lowest scores combined after two rounds of performances, sending fashionista Anna Delvey and “Beverly Hills: 90210” star Tori Spelling home instead.
Roberts and Stewart also visited The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles to gain inspiration for their dance performance.
