Eric Roberts expresses ‘public apology’ to sister Julia Roberts in his latest memoir: Report
Eric Roberts has shared his remorse towards his sister Julia Roberts.
The actor from “The Dark Knight” reflected on their public disagreement in his new book titled “Runaway Train,” where he includes what he describes as a “public apology” to Julia, as reported by People.
The memoir, named after the 1985 film that garnered Roberts Golden Globe and Oscar nominations alongside Jon Voight, was published on Monday.
As per the publication, the star of “Dancing with the Stars” Season 33 recounts a troubled childhood with their parents, Walter Roberts and Betty Lou Bredemus. Roberts characterized their father as a “messed-up person” who resented Eric’s career. Following their parents’ separation, Eric lived with their father while Julia stayed with their mother, who later remarried.
In his memoir, Roberts elaborates on his career beginnings, including “Runaway Train” and turning down the role of Jesus in the 1988 film “The Last Temptation of Christ,” which was his last chance to collaborate with the iconic director Martin Scorsese. He also discusses how issues like drug addiction, a severe car accident in 1981, and a lengthy coma affected his memory. During this period, Julia started her acting journey, eventually surpassing his success, prompting Eric to comment, “If it wasn’t for me, there would be no Julia Roberts.”
Eric Roberts stated, “I hope Julia will accept this public apology,” as quoted by People. “What I said was foolish.”
His struggles with addiction created a strained relationship with Julia, 56, and with his half-sister, Nancy Motes, as Eric Roberts noted that it was “dangerous to be around me.” The most significant outcome of his drug issue was losing custody of his daughter, Emma Roberts. This custody battle resulted in a rift with Julia, who supported Emma’s mother, Kim Cunningham. In his memoir, Eric acknowledges that this was ultimately the right decision.
“I guess I’ll always be known as Julia’s brother and Emma’s dad,” he wrote. “I want to make amends and step aside gracefully. That’s one of the reasons I decided to write this book.”
Earlier this year, Eric Roberts reflected that he often “can’t mention” Julia or Emma during an interview on the “Still Here Hollywood” podcast. When host Steve Kmetko inquired about Julia’s well-being, he replied, “You’ll have to ask her.”
“I adore my sister, but I can’t talk about her,” Roberts remarked in the April 1 episode. “And when it comes to my daughter, she prefers I not share anything about her, though I sometimes do. I’m really not meant to speak about either of them, yet I do.”
Later in the podcast, when asked about actors he looks up to, the Oscar nominee stated, “I’m absolutely in love with my daughter’s recent work. I can’t believe how talented she has become. My pride in her is overwhelming.”
