Eric Roberts has opened up about a very challenging time in his relationship with his daughter, Emma Roberts.

The actor, who is currently a contestant on “Dancing with the Stars” Season 33, shared his feelings on the “Inside of You” podcast during a recent episode, discussing what he sees as a difficult chapter in his life.

“The loss of my relationship with my daughter stands out,” he shared with host Michael Rosenbaum, referring to the bond as “indefinable.”

“It’s not really a pain; it’s more of a sadness regarding the misunderstandings that may linger between us forever,” he added. “Such is the human experience.”

Roberts’ reflections come after he revealed more about his life and struggles in his new memoir, “Runaway Train: Or, The Story of My Life So Far”. In the book, he also addresses a public disagreement with his sister, Julia Roberts, where he offers her a “public apology.”

In the memoir, the 68-year-old discusses his turbulent upbringing, his battle with addiction, and the impact of Julia’s rising fame, which overshadowed his own. He made statements like: “If it weren’t for me, there would be no Julia Roberts.”

“I really hope Julia can find it in her heart to accept this public apology,” he mentions in the book. “It was a foolish comment to make.”

He goes on to state that the “most significant consequence” of his drug addiction was losing custody of his young daughter Emma Roberts, 33. This custody dispute also created a divide with Julia Roberts, 56, who supported Emma’s mother, Kim Cunningham. Eric acknowledges in his memoir that this was ultimately the right decision.

“I anticipate remaining just Julia’s brother and Emma’s dad for my entire life,” he reflects. “I aspire to make amends and step back with dignity and grace. This is part of why I wrote the book.”

Earlier this year, Eric Roberts mentioned that he is unable to discuss his sister or daughter in an interview on the “Still Here Hollywood” podcast. When asked about his sister, he stated, “You’ll need to ask her directly.”

“I hold love for my sister, but it’s hard for me to talk about her,” he said during the episode aired on April 1. “And my daughter has told me not to speak about her, yet I sometimes inadvertently do. I’m not meant to discuss either, but somehow I end up doing so.”
