Erik Menendez criticizes Ryan Murphy and Netflix for ‘false depiction’ of his parents’ killings
Erik Menendez has expressed his discontent with Netflix and a Hollywood producer concerning a new series inspired by his life.
Menendez, one of the Menendez brothers who were found guilty of murdering their parents at their Beverly Hills home in 1989 alongside his brother Lyle Menendez, voiced his concerns about the series. In a message shared by his wife, Tammie Menendez, he criticized “an exaggerated representation of Lyle filled with awful and blatant untruths” on social media last Thursday night.
“I can only assume this was done intentionally,” he stated. “It truly saddens me to say that I do not believe Ryan Murphy could be so oblivious and inaccurate about our life experiences without malicious intent.”
He further remarked: “It is disheartening to see Netflix’s misleading portrayal of the events surrounding our crime regress the painful truths, bringing us back to a time when the prosecution constructed a narrative based on a belief system that dismissed the notion that males could be sexually abused and that they process rape trauma differently than women.”
Menendez emphasized in his statement that “those dreadful falsehoods have been challenged and revealed by numerous courageous victims over the past twenty years who have confronted their shame and spoken up” and “now Murphy distorts this horrid narrative through disgraceful and offensive character representations of Lyle and myself, along with distressing slander.” He concluded by questioning “is the truth not sufficient?” and expressed his gratitude for the support he has received.
The trial of the Menendez brothers garnered significant media attention. They claimed that the killing of José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez stemmed from years of abuse, but both were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life without parole.
The second part of Netflix’s “Monster” true-crime anthology series premiered on Thursday, continuing from last year’s controversial “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” which received backlash from some of Dahmer’s victims’ families.
What occurred in the Menendez family murders?
The murders committed by the Menendez brothers sparked discussions and interest regarding the nature of their acts.
August marked a somber anniversary as it has been 35 years since the tragic event. The brothers were convicted for using shotguns to kill their wealthy parents at the family’s Beverly Hills estate. At the time, Lyle Menendez was 21 years old, and Erik was 18; both shot José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez multiple times, including at close range to the head.
During the trial, Lyle and Erik alleged that their father, who worked as an executive at RCA Records, inflicted physical, sexual, and emotional abuse upon them throughout their upbringing. In “Monsters”, Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch take on the roles of Lyle and Erik Menendez, respectively.
In the Murphy series, Oscar-winner Javier Bardem portrays José Menendez, while Oscar nominee Chloë Sevigny plays Kitty.
