‘Ghosts’ Season 4 Introduces New Characters, Holiday Specials, and Major Changes

At last, Utkarsh Ambudkar’s character will meet some ghosts.

For the past three seasons of CBS’s supernatural comedy “Ghosts,” his wife’s character has been able to interact with quirky spirits, while he has been left out. However, that changes with Season 4 (debuting Thursday at 8:30 EDT/PDT), and Ambudkar couldn’t be happier.

“Yes! If I could, I would throw this table right now!” Ambudkar exclaimed during a “Ghosts” event at Comic-Con in July. “Finally, I get to speak to my co-workers!”

The storyline of “Ghosts” revolves around Sam (played by Rose McIver) and Jay (Ambudkar), a couple who relocate to upstate New York after inheriting an old mansion. They aim to convert it into the Woodstone Bed & Breakfast, but Sam’s near-death experience gives her the ability to communicate with the various vibrant spirits that reside there.

The fresh season, filmed in Montreal, will introduce several new characters, both alive and dead.

Mary Holland will portray Patience, the ghost of a highly critical Puritan woman who was left by her partner, Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones), who is a ghost from the Revolutionary War. At the end of Season 3, the wild Patience kidnapped Isaac, and fans are eager to see what she has planned for him in the premiere of Season 4.

According to “Ghosts” executive producer Joe Port, Holland’s character is “funny, quirky, and offbeat, making her a perfect fit for Patience.” Román Zaragoza, who plays Sasappis, a Lenape Native American spirit, has already filmed a scene with Holland and praised her talents.

Another new cast member is Dean Norris from “Breaking Bad,” who will play Sam’s father, Frank. Their relationship has been strained since Frank divorced Sam’s mother when she was just 10. He visits Woodstone with his new girlfriend, and old conflicts arise when a new ghost prompts a long-overdue father/daughter conversation.

Port shared that executive producer Joe Wiseman’s 16-year-old daughter suggested Norris for the role after binge-watching “Breaking Bad.” “He’s bringing his trademark gruffness to the character,” Port added.

Additionally, creators of “Ghosts” announced that the third episode of the new season will be Halloween-themed, heavily featuring Patience. “This Puritan ghost will impact the house and may not be too fond of Halloween,” Port teased.

A special one-hour Christmas episode is also on the way, introducing Jay’s large family. “There are 19 of them, so it’s sure to be chaotic!” Ambudkar mentioned, noting that it will be a significant opportunity for Sam to gain approval from Jay’s family and showcase the unconditional love between them.

This season will also showcase the launch of Jay’s restaurant, leading Ambudkar to joke that “Ghosts” is about to transform into the hilariously funny “The Bear.”

The panel at Comic-Con allowed actors to share their favorite moments from past episodes, including a poignant scene in Season 3 where the uptight spirit Hetty (Rebecca Wisocky) confesses her suicide and uses the phone cord to help save fellow ghost Flower (Sheila Carrasco) from a well.

Wisocky revealed that she and fellow cast members consulted mental health experts due to the sensitive nature of the topic. Since the episode aired, many fans have come to her to share their personal stories.

“It’s incredible to have that kind of engagement with our audience, especially for an absurd half-hour comedy,” Wisocky stated. Her character, the original matriarch of Woodstone Manor, also experienced a powerful revelation about empathy. “She opened up more than ever before to this group,” she added.

However, she remarked, “I’m not sure if this means she’ll be a good person from now on.” Wiseman mentioned there has been a gradual softening of Hetty’s character, and she’s likely to assist her great-great-great-great-niece with the B&B while Jay focuses on his restaurant venture.

In closing, Wisocky said, “I think I might become a bit more in the way, possibly bossy about the business operations.”
