Little League World Series Live: Updates and Highlights from Sunday Games

After 34 thrilling games in the Little League World Series, the competition has narrowed down from the original 20 teams to just the final two vying for the championship title on Sunday.

The day began with the third-place match at Lamade Stadium, where Venezuela played against Texas, emerging victorious with a close score of 4-3.

Following that, the highly anticipated Championship Game featured the undefeated team from Chinese Taipei, who had proven themselves throughout the tournament, facing off against Florida, entering the game with a 6-1 record.

This match turned out to be a nail-biter, as only a single run was scored before the sixth inning. True to their reputation, the Florida team from Lake Mary staged a comeback in the final moments to send the game into extra innings. In the eighth inning, a critical error by Chinese Taipei allowed Florida to secure a 2-1 victory, marking an impressive finish.

Check out all the highlights from today’s LLWS games.

Florida Captures Its First LLWS Title

The championship clash at the 2024 Little League World Series was filled with excitement. Lake Mary, Florida, needed to win four elimination games and staged comebacks in both the semifinals and finals to clinch the title, capped off by a well-executed bunt and a crucial defensive error from the opposition. Here’s a look at the winning bunt that brought Florida its first championship.

Final Score: Florida 2, Chinese Taipei 1

In a dramatic inning beginning with a runner on second, Florida decided to use a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner. However, due to miscommunication from Chinese Taipei, the pitcher threw to first base, where no one was covering, allowing the ball to roll into right field and enabling the runner to score easily. It concluded a thrilling finish to an unforgettable LLWS final.

Florida maintains a streak of six consecutive championships for U.S. teams, finishing with a score of 2-1 against Chinese Taipei.

Chinese Taipei Struggles to Score

With two outs and a base runner at second, Zhuang Jie-En made a powerful hit to deep left field, but Jacob Bibaub made a fantastic catch at the warning track to preserve the tie at 1 heading into the bottom of the eighth.

Florida Falls Short Again

Yet another inning presented Florida with an opportunity to score. Despite positioning runners at second and third thanks to a double hit by Chikodroff, Latham Norton struck out to close the inning, missing yet another chance for Florida to secure the win.

Taipei on the Offense but Can’t Capitalize

Taipei showed signs of life early in the seventh inning, even considering taking Latham Norton off the mound. Nevertheless, Norton managed to escape the inning unharmed. After allowing two runners to reach base, he struck out the next two batters, preventing either runner from advancing. Florida only needed one run to claim victory as they headed into the bottom of the seventh.

Florida Breaks the Stalemate!

Following a hit-by-pitch that placed Chase Anderson on base, Chiu Wei-Che got JJ Feliciano to pop out to center, followed by a disputed strike call that led to Garrett Rohozen’s strikeout.

With a walk issued to Landon Bono, the game hung in the balance when DJ Mieses, who had captured attention with his stylish batting, stepped up. Mieses established a 2-0 count, then hit a bloop single to left center, allowing Anderson to trot home from second while Bono slid into third. Mieses also advanced to second base.

Next, it was Jacob Bibaub, the leading hitter for Florida, who unfortunately grounded out to third, leaving both runners stranded. However, after several innings of near misses, Florida finally broke free and scored at the last moment.

We’re heading to extra innings tied at 1.

Norton Dominates Chinese Taipei

After an outstanding fifth inning, Latham Norton allowed his team one last shot at scoring as he led Florida with a quick three-up, three-down performance against Chinese Taipei in the top of the sixth. Florida needed to capitalize right away with only three outs remaining.

Chiu Wei-Che Shines for Chinese Taipei

Florida had put at least two runners on base or had a runner at third in each of the prior four innings, but the fifth inning proved different. Taipei switched pitchers to Chiu Wei-Che, who, despite giving up a hit, prevented that runner from reaching third base, only going as far as scoring position due to an unusual passed ball. At the conclusion of five innings, Taipei still led 1-0, maintaining the score since the first inning.

Lathan Norton steps in during the fifth

After a solid four innings from Jacob Bibaub, the Chinese Taipei team began to find their rhythm against him in the fifth, advancing runners to second and third with just one out.

Norton entered the game and gave up a walk, filling the bases. He then managed to get the next batter from Chinese Taipei to pop out to shallow left field, and in a crucial moment, he got Lin Chun-Yi to fly out to Morrissey in center field. The score remains 1-0 as we head into the bottom of the fifth inning.

Florida leaves another runner stranded at third

Florida has been consistently threatening to score in each inning, and the fourth was no exception. Center fielder Liam Morrissey advanced to third with two outs. Luis Calo hit a line drive to right field, but it went straight to the Taipei right fielder. This marked the first inning where Florida did not manage to put two runners on base, yet it was the third consecutive inning they had a runner on third without scoring.

With just two innings left to play, the score stands at 1-0 in favor of Chinese Taipei.

Chase Anderson records 10 consecutive outs for Chinese Taipei

During the first inning, Florida’s head coach advised his pitcher Jacob Bibaub to focus on throwing strikes and trusting his defense. This strategy paid off, as the top of the fourth wrapped up after shortstop Chase Anderson made a spectacular sliding catch and threw to first base. That’s ten straight outs for Bibaub, but Florida is still down 1-0.

Florida remains scoreless once more

In the initial three innings, Florida managed to get at least two runners on base, but after Landon Bono, the Little League Home Run Derby champ for 2024, grounded out to first with runners on second and third, Florida still couldn’t get on the scoreboard. Even with hits from Chase Anderson and JJ Feliciano, Florida has yet to tally any runs. After three innings, it’s 1-0 in favor of Chinese Taipei.

Another swift inning for Florida

Since the opening inning, Jacob Bibaub of Florida has managed to retire six batters in a row, keeping his team competitive in the game. Now, the offense needs to provide support.

Outstanding defensive play at third prevents a run for Chinese Taipei

Florida appeared ready to score their first run in the bottom of the second, loading the bases with no outs with tournament standout Teraj Alexander at bat. However, Alexander hit a ground ball to third base, where Taipei’s third baseman Yu Teng-Hao expertly stepped on third base and tagged the runner before he could score.

Florida did load the bases again before the inning ended, but Zhi-Kai struck out Florida’s Lathan Norton, leaving them unable to capitalize. After two innings, it’s still 1-0 for Chinese Taipei.

A quick inning for Florida

Following the first inning where they gave up the initial run, Jacob Bibaub rebounded strongly in the second, retiring three batters in a row. Although Luis Calo made an excellent catch in right field to finish the inning, this was a solid response from Bibaub, who has thrown 40 pitches across two innings.

Florida threatens but fails to score

After a pair of quick outs to begin the bottom of the first, Florida began to rally when Taipei’s starter Ciou Zhi-Kai walked the next two batters. DJ Mieses stepped to the plate with a chance to even the score. Mieses has been one of the standout hitters for Florida throughout the tournament. Unfortunately, Mieses fell victim to Zhi-Kai’s sharp curveball, leading to a strikeout.

Florida ended the inning without scoring. At the end of one inning, the score stands at 1-0 for Chinese Taipei.

Chinese Taipei demonstrates patience at the plate

Jacob Bibaub, the pitcher for Florida, struggled with his control early in the game. Chinese Taipei kicked things off with two consecutive walks, rarely swinging their bats. Following the walks, they executed a sacrifice bunt to advance runners to second and third with no outs.

Florida did manage to achieve a second out, but a base hit from Hu Yen-Chun, which deflected off Florida’s third baseman, brought in the first run of the game. After the top of the first, Chinese Taipei is leading 1-0.

Why didn’t Texas get a second chance after their loss?

Before losing to Florida in the U.S. Championship, Burney, TX was considered the top team in the tournament, boasting an undefeated record until that match. Their defeat against Florida eliminated them from contention for the 2024 LLWS title. Since the LLWS operates as a double-elimination tournament, this raises the question: “Why didn’t Texas receive another opportunity?” After all, they previously defeated Florida in an earlier match.

It’s a disappointing situation, but the 2024 LLWS is not a complete double-elimination format. The championship games are final, which may seem unjust to Texas fans, but this structure is necessary for the tournament to stay on schedule, especially with ESPN’s broadcasting and programming constraints. Texas still showed great performance during the tournament and will be remembered for their impressive run, even after a loss to Venezuela in the consolation match.

Chinese Taipei’s route to the Finals

Chinese Taipei had a straightforward journey to the LLWS Finals, winning each game they played convincingly. In fact, they have not allowed more than two runs in any game throughout the tournament. Across five games, they have outscored their opponents 36-4 overall.

This team defeated Canada, Australia, Cuba, Japan, and Venezuela in sequential order to reach the Finals in Lake Mary, FL.

Florida’s pathway to the Finals

Florida’s route to the LLWS Finals has been less direct. After winning their first two matches against the Midwest and Northwest teams, they faced a loss against Texas, which sent them to the loser’s bracket. Since that point, Florida has bounced back, winning four consecutive matches, including a 10-7 victory in a rematch against Texas during the U.S. Finals. In their last four games, they managed to concede more than three runs only once.

Who will compete in the LLWS championship game?

Chinese Taipei and Florida are set to battle for the 2024 LLWS championship title at 3 p.m. ET, broadcasting live on ABC.

Venezuela claims third place with a 4-3 win over Texas at the 2024 LLWS

Collins hit a 3-1 pitch towards the right in the top of the sixth inning, but Vicheria was in position to catch the line drive. The international runners-up defeat their U.S. counterparts to secure the win in the third-place match.

Texas has the bases loaded

A few walks, sandwiching a strikeout, have loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the sixth inning. Gray Collins is at bat, and Venezuela is holding a slim one-run lead, creating an exciting moment.

Willian Mora leaves the game

The Venezuelan starter has reached his pitch limit after securing his eighth strikeout of the day in the sixth inning. He concludes his outing with four hits, three runs (none earned), no walks, and eight strikeouts. Carrasquel steps in with two outs in the top of the final inning.

Inning-ending double play keeps Texas in the game

Muñoz fields a ground ball, and shortstop Jett Matthews records the out, successfully completing a fantastic double play that prevents a run from scoring. Venezuela leads 4-3 as Texas has one last opportunity at bat in the top of the sixth inning.

Mora secures the fifth inning without incident

Mora lets runners reach second and third but prevents any from scoring in the top of the fifth inning. He strikes out Gabe Steubing for his seventh strikeout of the day. The score remains 4-3 in favor of Venezuela.

Aiden Muñoz throws out a runner at home plate

Joshua Durán hits a ground ball that narrowly touches first base for a single. Muñoz, Texas’ second baseman, is well-positioned and throws out Santiago Bello, who attempted to score from second. The game remains close as the fifth inning begins.

Caden Guffey exits in the fourth inning

Texas’ starter reaches his pitch limit after 3 2/3 innings. He exits with two runners on and two outs as Cooper Hastings comes in to relieve him.

Vicheria assists Mora in another flawless inning

The Venezuelan second baseman makes a diving catch on a ground ball, throwing from his knees to get the out at first. This accomplishment extends Mora’s streak to 11 consecutive batters retired.

A walk with the bases loaded gives Venezuela the lead

With the count full and bases loaded, Carrasquel watches a pitch that barely misses for a ball. This brings Zarraga home for Venezuela’s second run of the inning, giving them a 4-3 advantage over Texas after three innings.

Venezuela levels the score

Beiker Zarraga bunts and reaches first due to a throwing error by Guffey. The misthrow allows Jonathan Landaeta to come home from second, tying the game for Venezuela.

Mora racks up two more strikeouts in a perfect inning

The Venezuelan pitcher seems to have shaken off his shaky start. Mora has successfully retired eight of Texas’ hitters consecutively, throwing another scoreless inning in the third, picking up his fourth and fifth strikeouts in the process.

Simón Vicheria contributes another run for Venezuela

With the bases loaded and one out, Vicheria hits a grounder to second but outruns the potential double play. This allows Barrieta to score, making it a close contest as the third inning unfolds, with Texas leading 3-2.

Diego Biarreta brings one back for Venezuela

The first baseman smacks a hit into the left-center gap, bringing in Samuel Carrasquel to trim Venezuela’s deficit to two, but Texas still leads 3-1.

Mora delivers a flawless second inning

After allowing multiple runs in the first, Mora puts together a solid 1-2-3 inning, marking his third strikeout of the day in the second.

Caden Guffey navigates through a tough situation

Venezuela loads the bases with singles from the first two batters, but Guffey strikes out the next and capitalizes on a double play from the fourth to escape the inning unscathed. Texas still leads 3-0 after one inning.

Texas capitalizes on Venezuelan mistakes for an early lead

With runners on first and second, a ground ball by Doc Mogford back to pitcher Willian Mora turns disastrous for the Venezuelan team. Mora overthrew third base, allowing both runners to score and sending Mogford to third.

Shortly after, Venezuelan catcher Jesús Díaz fails to control a pitch from Mora, resulting in a passed ball that allows Mogford to score. It’s now 3-0 for Texas following the top of the first inning.

Venezuela and Texas prepare for the third-place game

The two teams that finished as runners-up in their respective brackets will clash in the Little League World Series’ third-place game. Essentially, a team needs to lose two games to be eliminated from the tournament.
