Check Out the Deleted Opening Scene from ‘Inside Out 2’: Riley Struggles at the Talent Show
In an early version of Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” the beloved awkward teenager, Riley Andersen, comically fails at a talent show.
The filmmakers intended to start the animated film with a scene called Cold Open. It featured a spotlighted Riley, nervously playing the ukulele, fumbling her own name, singing out of tune, and battling microphone issues.
Director Kelsey Mann explained, “We aimed to immediately draw the audience into Riley’s experience as she transitions into her teenage years.” The partially animated clip was unveiled by YSL News in conjunction with the Tuesday digital release of “Inside Out 2.” The film will be released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on September 10. “She feels incredibly self-conscious, and we thought a talent show would perfectly illustrate that.”
This scene effectively captures Riley (voiced by Kensington Tallman) with humor, even in its unfinished form.
After conducting the first test screening, Mann, producer Mark Nielsen, and screenwriter Meg LeFauve opted to open the sequel with Riley in her familiar world from the first film. Riley, who has a passion for hockey, kicks off the story with her enthusiastic moment celebrating a victory in her last game before high school alongside her friends Bree and Grace.
“Inside Out 2” has introduced a 13-year-old Riley along with four new emotions: Anxiety, Ennui, Embarrassment, and Envy. The sequel has garnered immense critical and financial success, becoming the first film of 2024 to surpass the $1 billion mark at the box office.
The film has brought back the emotion Joy (voiced by Amy Poehler) to theaters and is on track to be the highest-grossing animated film ever, currently earning $1.6 billion globally. Following this success, it is expected to be a strong contender in the awards season, similar to the first “Inside Out,” which received two Academy Award nominations and won for Best Animated Feature.
