Exploring the Safety of Santa Monica’s Iconic ‘Barbenheimer’ Homes Against LA Fires

Are the iconic ‘Barbenheimer’ houses in Santa Monica secure from LA fires? Here’s what we found out

The renowned “Barbenheimer” homes located in Santa Monica, which gained attention online for their eye-catching contrast, have not been impacted by the wildfires in California, as confirmed by video footage taken on Thursday.

These two neighboring residences along Pacific Coast Highway, referred to as the “Barbenheimer” homes due to the success of the “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” films released in July 2023, were reported to be unharmed by the wildfires. Javier Carrillo, a videographer for Stringr, verified their condition to YSL News after an on-site visit on Thursday.

Positioned on the beach in Santa Monica, these two slender homes, also known as the “Sherbet Homes,” have gained popularity on social media for their unique designs. From the view along Pacific Coast Highway, the left home presents a gothic style with a completely black facade, while the right home is styled like a dollhouse with vibrant pink and purple features. Their striking contrast mirrors the theme of the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, which linked the two movie releases.

Prior to the “Barbenheimer” trend, these homes were already a well-known tourist spot in Santa Monica, with images of the houses circulating as early as 2016. Over time, they have also become popular in memes that depict the idea of duality.

As of Friday morning, the homes were not under evacuation orders, although there was a nearby evacuation warning zone, according to Cal Fire.

By Friday morning, the Palisades Fire had burned over 20,000 acres and was only 8% contained. The Hurst Fire had consumed more than 770 acres and was 37% contained, while the Eaton Fire had charred nearly 14,000 acres and was at 3% containment, according to Cal Fire.

On Wednesday, two more fires broke out: the Sunset Fire in Hollywood Hills and the Lidia Fire in Acton. As of Thursday afternoon, the Sunset Fire, which affected around 43 acres, had been fully contained, while the Lidia Fire had burned almost 400 acres and was 75% contained by Friday afternoon.

More recently, on Thursday, the Kenneth Fire started near Bell Canyon, in the vicinity of Hidden Hills. By Friday morning, it had burned a significant area of 1,000 acres and was 35% contained, according to Cal Fire.

As of Friday, over 10,000 homes, businesses, and other structures had been damaged or completely destroyed. At least 10 fatalities have been reported, as stated by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. Approximately 180,000 residents were under evacuation orders, with an additional 200,000 advised to prepare for potential evacuations, as indicated by Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna.
