FBI Reports New Offensive Text Messages Targeting Hispanic and LGBTQ+ Communities

The FBI has announced that a new wave of hurtful and discriminatory text messages is aimed at individuals in the LGBTQ+ and Hispanic communities, as well as high school students.

These recent messages have informed recipients that they have been chosen for deportation or directed them to attend a re-education camp, the FBI revealed on Friday. This follows a previous series of offensive texts sent to Black college students across the country last week, which included derogatory references to America’s slave-owning past.

The FBI is collaborating with the Justice Department and other federal agencies concerning these messages.

They stated, “While we have not observed any violent incidents linked to these messages, we are actively investigating all reported cases and coordinating with the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice.”

Here’s what we know so far.

Texts Following Other Offensive Reports

These initial texts were distributed on November 6, coinciding with the announcement of now-President elect Donald Trump’s victory over Vice President Kamala Harris. Though the details varied, the core message was consistent, stating that recipients had “been selected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation.”

Currently, the identity of those behind the messages remains unknown. Some messages were purportedly sent by “a Trump supporter,” though this claim is not substantiated.

Students from institutions such as Clemson University, Ohio State, and the University of Alabama have reported receiving these distasteful texts. Additionally, there have been accounts of high school students receiving similar messages.

Mary Banks, a parent from Columbus, Ohio, informed YSL News that her 16-year-old daughter and some of her friends received these messages as well.

Nana Watson, President of the Columbus NAACP, expressed to The Columbus Dispatch, part of the YSL News Network, that she views the messages as acts of hate.

“This represents peak racism,” Watson asserted.

The FBI urges anyone who receives such messages to report the incidents at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or online at tips.fbi.gov.
