Fernanda Torres Issues Apology for Controversial Blackface Performance in Vintage Comedy Sketch

Oscar nominee Fernanda Torres issues apology for blackface in old comedy sketch

Fernanda Torres, an Oscar nominee, has publicly apologized for her use of blackface in a comedy sketch from 17 years ago.

The 59-year-old star of “I’m Still Here” released a statement to Deadline on Sunday, admitting, “Almost two decades ago, I performed in blackface during a comedy sketch from a Brazilian television show.” A spokesperson for Torres confirmed her statement to YSL News on Monday.

The sketch from the Brazilian program “Fantastico” showcased Torres in blackface portraying a housekeeper.

“I deeply regret this,” Torres expressed to Deadline. “I feel it’s important to address this quickly to mitigate any further pain or confusion.”

“Back then, despite the efforts of Black organizations and activists, the understanding of the racist implications and history of blackface was not yet widely recognized in Brazil. Thanks to improved cultural awareness and significant yet ongoing advancements today, it is now evident that blackface is unacceptable both in our country and globally.”

She added, “This is a crucial discussion we must keep having to prevent the normalization of racist behavior, both past and present. As an artist and global citizen, I am dedicated and determined to work towards essential changes that foster a world free from inequality and racism.”

Torres is among the five nominees for best actress at the 2025 Oscars, recognized for her performance in “I’m Still Here,” which has also received a nomination for best picture. Some experts believe she will secure the Academy Award.

Earlier this month, Torres surprised many at the Golden Globes by winning the award for best actress in a drama film, making her the first Brazilian to achieve this honor. In 1999, her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, received a nomination in the same category for “Central Station.”

Torres also made history as the first Brazilian to be nominated for the best actress Oscar since her mother’s nomination in 1999 for “Central Station.”

“Oh my, I didn’t prepare any remarks because I was just so happy,” Torres stated during her acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, adding, “Naturally, I want to dedicate this to my mother.”
