Final Countdown: Three States Gear Up for the Last Primary Elections of the Season

Tuesday marks the end of the primary season in three states

Believe it or not, state primary elections are still taking place even though the general election is only eight weeks away. On Tuesday, Delaware, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island will wrap up the 2024 primary election season.

So, who is running for office and in which states?

Delaware’s primary election

With U.S. Sen. Tom Carper and Delaware Gov. John Carney stepping down, their positions are now available for new candidates. This has led to a contested primary for both parties.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester and Republican ex-Walmart executive Eric Hansen are vying to take Carper’s seat. However, they are running uncontested within their parties and will not be listed on the ballot this Tuesday.

Carney, who is ineligible for a third term as governor due to state law, is running for mayor of Wilmington. His primary rival is former state treasurer Velda Jones-Potter, who also has experience in statewide office.

The Democratic candidates for the governor position include Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long, New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer, and former state Natural Resources Secretary Collin O’Mara. The Republican candidates are retired police officer Jerry Price, state House Minority Leader Michael Ramone, and small business owner Bobby Williamson.

According to the Associated Press, Hall-Long is the only candidate who has previously held statewide office and has the endorsement of Carney. However, her campaign faced challenges after a state audit revealed financial improprieties over eight years. Hall-Long disputes the findings, attributing them to bookkeeping errors.

New Hampshire’s primary election

With Republican Gov. Chris Sununu and Democratic Rep. Annie Kuster retiring, their positions have opened for new candidates.

Two leading Democrats and two leading Republicans are competing for Sununu’s seat, as he completes four terms.

The Hill reported that former Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig and New Hampshire Executive Councilor Cinde Warmington are first among the Democratic contenders, while former Sen. Kelly Ayotte and former New Hampshire Senate President Chuck Morse are the prime candidates for the Republican nomination.

To replace Kuster, two Democrats are in the running: former Biden official Maggie Goodlander, who served as counsel during Trump’s first impeachment, and former New Hampshire Executive Councilor Colin Van Ostern, who managed Kuster’s campaign.

Rhode Island’s primary election

In Rhode Island, incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse is facing a primary challenger named Mike Costa, though Whitehouse is considered likely to win.

Meanwhile, Republican state Rep. Patricia Morgan and Raymond McKay will compete for the opportunity to challenge Whitehouse on November 5.
