Final Verdict Delivered in YSL Trial: Young Thug’s Co-Defendants Weigh In

Conclusion of YSL Trial: Verdicts for Young Thug’s Co-Defendants Announced

Following rapper Young Thug’s acceptance of a plea deal, the case involving the final defendants in the YSL trial has reached its conclusion.

After extended court proceedings that have made it the longest-running criminal trial in Georgia history, the last two defendants received their verdicts on Tuesday.

In a complex racketeering case, Deamonte Kendrick, known as Yak Gotti, and Shannon Stillwell were acquitted of numerous charges including murder and firearm possession.

However, Stillwell was convicted on one charge of felony gun possession and received a 10-year probation sentence from Judge Paige Whitaker, with credit for time already served.

“We are elated that the jury returned with not guilty verdicts for Mr. Kendrick,” stated Kendrick’s attorney, Doug Weinstein, to YSL News on Wednesday. “We were confident that if the jury examined the evidence—or the lack of it—they would conclude with not guilty on all counts.”

YSL News has requested comments from Stillwell’s legal team and the Fulton County district attorney’s office.

Judge Whitaker expressed gratitude to the jury for their service, acknowledging the lengthy nature of the trial, which officially began in November 2023.

This case centered on a broad conspiracy claim involving 28 co-defendants, including Young Thug, with accusations that they were part of YSL, or “Young Slime Life.” While prosecutors argued that this acronym indicated a violent street gang, the defense contended that “YSL” referred solely to “Young Stoner Life,” Young Thug’s record label.

Many defendants, including Young Thug—whose actual name is Jeffery Lamar Williams—opted for plea agreements. In contrast, Stillwell and Kendrick chose to go to trial, which resulted in a drawn-out legal battle during which both faced violent incidents in jail.

Kendrick was stabbed just days before the verdict was announced, adding to the numerous controversies of a widely-publicized trial that included debates over the admissibility of rap lyrics as evidence and attorneys being taken into custody.

“We are disheartened that the prosecution pursued this case against Mr. Kendrick and the others given the clear lack of evidence, which was shown through the reliance on the defendants’ artistic expressions in their rap lyrics during the trial,” noted Weinstein on Wednesday.

This prosecution, led by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, is one of two high-profile RICO cases currently underway. The other involves President-elect Donald Trump, which faced scrutiny when it was revealed that Willis had a romantic relationship with Nathan Wade, the lead prosecutor for that case.

The ongoing case against Trump purports that he and his associates sought to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia, but progress has been slow due to various legal challenges.

Whether the case will continue post-election remains uncertain, as Special Counsel Jack Smith closed his investigations into Trump’s election interference after the elections, citing that the Department of Justice typically prohibits the indictment and prosecution of a sitting president.
