Highlights from the Little League World Series: Florida and Venezuela Move Forward

The Little League World Series continued on Thursday with some exciting matches.

In the opening match, Japan was aiming for redemption after their loss to Chinese Taipei, but they were edged out by Venezuela with a score of 3-2. Venezuela is set to compete against Chinese Taipei in the international championship game on Saturday.

During the break between games, the T-Mobile Little League Home Run Derby took place, allowing top-performing players to showcase their swings just like the pros. This event gives kids from diverse backgrounds a chance to represent their community on this major Little League platform.

Little League announced that the home run derby “is scheduled for Thursday, August 22, at 5 p.m. ET, and it will be broadcast on ESPN2 on Friday, August 23, at 7 p.m. ET.”

Stay tuned for live updates on the Little League World Series action taking place on Thursday, Aug. 23.

Florida 6, Nevada 3

Florida is set for a rematch against Texas after defeating Nevada in the U.S. semifinals. Teraj Alexander excelled on the mound for Florida, going 3.2 innings without allowing any runs before being pulled with two outs remaining in the sixth after giving up a base hit to Caleb Gomez.

JJ Feliciano stepped in to close out the game for Florida. With the tying run at the plate, Feliciano managed to get Russell McGee to fly out to Liam Morrissey in center field.

The U.S. championship game is scheduled for Saturday, August 24.

Garrett Rohozen Matches Feliciano

Feliciano hit his second home run of the LLWS in this match, but his teammate Rohozen wasn’t to be outdone. With one out in the top of the sixth, Rohozen smashed the first pitch he saw over the left field wall. Florida now leads 6-3.

Nevada Cleared in Order

Teraj Alexander continued to be effective throughout the game. In the fifth inning, he went three-up, three-down against Nevada. As we head into the sixth inning, Florida is leading 5-3.

Solid Fifth by Russell McGee

Nevada has limited time to catch up against Florida. With just six outs left, pitcher Russell McGee needed to be at his best. In the fifth, he was impressive, giving up only one baserunner and striking out two batters. As we head into the bottom of the fifth, the score is 5-3 in favor of Florida.

Teraj Alexander’s Strong Fourth After Taking a Hit

The fourth inning didn’t start smoothly for Florida’s Teraj Alexander, who was struck by a comebacker on the leg and made an errant throw to first, allowing a Nevada runner to advance to second. Despite appearing shaken, he quickly regrouped and proceeded with a three-up, three-down inning. Florida leads 5-3 heading into the fifth inning.

Dominic Laino Denies Florida Another Home Run

Florida nearly added another point when Landon Bono hit a deep fly ball to right field, but Dominic Laino, Nevada’s right fielder, made a fantastic catch just before the ball went over the wall. Florida’s lead remains 5-3 as we move into the bottom of the third.

JJ Feliciano Hits a Shot to Left

JJ Feliciano, one of Florida’s star players in the LLWS, made a significant impact in the top of the third inning by hitting his second tournament home run, giving Florida a 5-3 edge with only one out.

McGee and Norton Shine in the Second Inning

After rough outings in the first inning, both pitchers settled down and delivered strong second innings for their teams. The score is still 4-3 in favor of Florida as we head into the top of the third.

Nevada Scores Thanks to an Error

An unexpected error from Florida’s third baseman Garrett Rohozen allowed Nevada to score their second run. Rohozen couldn’t handle an easy double play ball, letting it skip under his glove and into the outfield.

Nevada’s Parker Soronaka capitalized on the opportunity with a sacrifice fly a pitch later. The score is 4-3 in favor of Florida with one out in the bottom of the first.

Nevada’s First Run Off a Check Swing

After loading the bases without any outs, similar to Florida’s first inning, Oliver Johnson contributed to Nevada’s scoring with a check swing that blooped over the shortstop into shallow left field. Although the runner from second attempted to score, he ultimately returned to the base.

Nevada is responding well

Following a challenging start to the first inning, Nevada quickly bounced back. Russell McGee hit a double down the left field line, resulting in two batters on, with runners now in scoring positions on second and third, and Wyatt Erickson ready to bat.

Florida strikes early

The introduction of Russell McGee didn’t alleviate Nevada’s struggles. McGee allowed two successive singles to right field. DJ Mieses and Landon Bono brought all the runners home when McGee came in, putting Florida ahead 3-0, but they weren’t finished yet.

Jacob Bibaub followed up by driving in Bono with a single to left field. Florida has not recorded an out yet and is already leading 4-0.

Nevada makes a pitching change

Nevada’s starting pitcher struggled today, walking each of Florida’s first three batters. In fact, none of the hitters from Florida even swung the bat, as all three advanced to base.

In an attempt to limit the damage, Nevada has brought in Russell McGee to stabilize their defense.

Updates from the LLWS Home Run Derby

The LLWS Home Run Derby kicked off at 5 p.m. ET, featuring eight participants from this year’s tournament competing for the title. You can find the full roster of contestants listed here.

Unfortunately, while the event took place today, it won’t air until tomorrow, August 23, at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2. The delay is because there are no LLWS games scheduled for tomorrow. Fans eager for more LLWS can catch the Home Run Derby during this break in action.

Florida’s journey to this stage

Nevada has played only three matches to reach this point, while Florida faced a tougher road. After winning their first two games by a combined score of 8-2, Florida faced a challenging matchup against powerful Texas, who defeated them 4-1. This loss dropped Florida to the loser’s bracket, where they had to win against New York and Hawaii to stay in contention. A win tonight puts them on track for a rematch with Texas.

Nevada’s route to this stage

Nevada has been one of the most surprising teams in this year’s tournament, reaching this point with impressive pitching. They have scored more than three runs only once in the entire tournament but have managed to keep their opponents under five runs.

They began the tournament with a notable victory against the New York team, winning 9-1. The second game was much tougher, as Hawaii pushed Nevada to the limit, resulting in a narrow 3-2 win. However, in their most recent match, Texas proved too strong, defeating Nevada 5-2.

Upcoming LLWS games

As the LLWS progresses, there are fewer games to enjoy each day. The only game scheduled for today is the U.S. semifinals featuring Nevada against Florida. Florida is aiming for a third consecutive win from the loser’s bracket to secure a spot in the U.S. finals against Texas. Meanwhile, Nevada is looking to rebound after their first loss of the tournament against Texas, setting the stage for a possible rematch this Saturday.

The game between Nevada and Florida is slated to start at 7 p.m. ET tonight.

Venezuela edges out Japan 3-2

Venezuela managed to hold off Japan and win 3-2, securing a place in the International Championship against Chinese Taipei on Saturday.

Japan remains defensive

Japan showcased strong defense once again, keeping Venezuela scoreless in the top of the sixth. They need to score one run to tie and two to win.

Venezuela counters Japan’s defense

Following Japan’s strong defensive inning, Venezuela quickly retired Japan’s batters in the bottom of the fifth, maintaining a 3-2 lead as they headed into the sixth.

Japan holds Venezuela in the fifth

Japan continued their defensive prowess, keeping Venezuela from scoring in the top of the fifth inning.

Japan reacts and scores in the 4th

After one Japanese player was hit by a pitch, they reached first base. The next hitter delivered a ball into the outfield, securing a double. Japan stepped up their game with a bases-loaded walk, allowing them to register a run.

They managed to add a second run with an infield single, narrowing the score to 3-2 as they headed into the fifth.

Venezuela scores first

Venezuela took the initiative, hitting back-to-back triples and scoring three runs to take the lead. They almost notched a fourth run, but Japan’s right fielder made a crucial catch at the wall for the third out. Venezuela entered the bottom of the fourth with a 3-0 lead.

Defense shines on both sides

Defensive play dominated the game as Japan held Venezuela scoreless at the top of the third inning.

Venezuela prevents a run in the 2nd inning

With two outs and two Japanese runners on base, Venezuela’s second baseman executed an infield hit and threw to first for the out, preventing a crucial run in a tightly contested game.

Quick action for Japan in the 2nd inning

Japan swiftly retired three Venezuelan batters in the top of the second inning, preparing to bat in the bottom half of the inning.

Venezuela restricts Japan from scoring

Japan managed to get some players on base, but a miscommunication by the final batter, who confused a strike with a ball, led to an attempted advance. A throw to third sealed Venezuela’s third out.

Japan efficiently dismisses batters in the 1st inning

Japan entered the game with resolve after their loss to Chinese Taipei the day before. They quickly sent three consecutive Venezuelan batters back to the dugout in the top of the first inning.

When is the LLWS Home Run Derby?

The sixth edition of the Little League World Series Home Run Derby is set for August 22, beginning at 5 p.m. ET. Make sure to tune in to ESPN2 to catch all the action on Friday, August 23.

What is the LLWS Home Run Derby Format?

The Home Run Derby format is easy to understand: each player gets 1 minute and 30 seconds to hit as many home runs as they can. Home runs are defined as fair balls that fly over the fence in fair territory. However, balls landing on the chalk lines won’t count as home runs.

All home runs must be hit before the next pitch is thrown. If a pitch is thrown before the previous ball lands, it won’t count as a home run. After the initial round, the top 10 hitters will progress to the second round.

For the second round, the 10 participants will again have 1 minute and 30 seconds to hit home runs. The batting order will depend on the number of home runs hit in the first round, with the lowest-scoring participant batting first. The five players with the most home runs will move on to the final round.

In the final round, each of the top five contestants will have 1 minute and 30 seconds to hit as many home runs as they can. The order will be determined based on the second round scores, with the participant who hit the fewest home runs going first. At the conclusion of the final round, the player with the highest total of home runs will be declared the T-Mobile Little League Home Run Derby Champion.

The championship game of the Little League World Series (LLWS) is set for Sunday, August 25, starting at 3 p.m. ET. The third-place consolation match will also occur that day at 10 a.m. ET.

The championship games for the international and U.S. brackets, acting as semifinals for Sunday’s final, will be on Saturday, August 24, at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. ET.

How Does the Little League World Series Work?

The Little League World Series consists of two main brackets: one for the United States and another for international teams. Each bracket holds its own tournament, and the champions from each will compete against each other in the final.

Both brackets operate on a double-elimination basis, meaning a team can still move forward in the tournament even after losing one game. The losing team from the elimination bracket gets another chance to face off against the winner of their respective bracket to qualify for the LLWS championship.

This means that a team must lose two times to be completely out of the tournament.
