Florida Faces Fuel Crisis as Milton Approaches Landfall: Key Areas Affected

Gas Shortages Rise in Florida as Hurricane Milton Approaches. Maps Indicate the Worst Affected Cities.

In the Tampa-St. Petersburg region of Florida, three out of five gas stations are out of fuel just hours before Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall.

Gas Buddy, a popular app that helps users locate and save on gas, began monitoring fuel shortages on Monday evening. Since that time, almost 25% of the state’s 7,915 gas stations have run out of fuel. Most stations providing charging for electric vehicles remain operational.

The National Hurricane Center predicts Milton will strike Florida’s west coast by late Wednesday or early Thursday. The hurricane has experienced rapid fluctuations in intensity over the past few days as forecasters evaluate its potential for destruction.

During a press briefing early on Tuesday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis assured that more fuel is on its way. Although the rate of fuel depletion seems to be slowing, it has not completely ceased.

“We have been sending fuel to stations experiencing shortages over the last 24 hours,” DeSantis stated. “An additional 1.2 million gallons of both diesel and gasoline are currently being transported to Florida.”

Heavy Traffic on Roads Leading Out of Tampa

In the coming days, residents may put less pressure on gas stations in the Tampa area as many were seen evacuating the area early Tuesday.

HERE Technologies, a location-based data service, provided a visual comparison of traffic conditions on Tuesday morning compared to those on Monday. Roads that typically have smooth traffic turned into congested pathways on Tuesday, though the traffic largely cleared by the afternoon.

As of Wednesday morning, the hurricane center reported that the storm’s tropical-storm-force winds extended about 125 miles from its center, and could reach up to 200 miles upon making landfall.

According to WeatherTiger meteorologist Ryan Truchelut, Milton is expected to cause unprecedented surge conditions for west-central Florida; similar coastal flooding events have only been recorded during major hurricanes in 1848 and 1921.
