Little League World Series recap: Florida faces Chinese Taipei in the finals

This Saturday at the Little League World Series featured intense matches that determined the champions of both the United States and International brackets.

Chinese Taipei secured the International bracket title with an impressive defensive display, limiting a strong Venezuelan team to just three hits and winning 4-1. This victory adds to their impressive record of 17 overall championship wins in LLWS history, as they aim for yet another title.

In contrast, the United States Championship was filled with excitement. Florida mounted two remarkable comebacks to clinch a 10-7 victory after falling behind Texas by four runs early in the game and by two runs going into the final inning.

Here are all the highlights from today’s action in the Little League World Series.

When is the LLWS Championship Game?

The championship game of the 2024 Little League World Series, featuring Florida and Chinese Taipei, is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 25, as part of a double-header at Lamade Stadium.

All times are in Eastern.

  • Third-place Game: Venezuela vs. Texas, 10 a.m. | ESPN2
  • Championship Game: Chinese Taipei vs. Florida, 3 p.m. | ABC

Final Score: Florida 10, Texas 7

Texas managed to get a runner on base after one out, but Florida executed a double play to secure the win, completing a remarkable comeback from being down by four runs.

With this victory, Florida moves on to face Chinese Taipei in the final match on Sunday, while Texas will compete in the third-place game against Venezuela.

Quick baserunning nets another run for Florida

After Teraj Alexander received a walk, Florida displayed impressive baserunning when Liam Morrisey stole third. Texas was caught off guard, and the attempt to throw him out resulted in a wild throw.

Morrisey dashed home, making the score 10-7, while Alexander tried to stretch the play but was ultimately tagged out at third.

The inning concluded with Texas now needing three runs in the final moments of the game.

Luis Calo’s two RBIs give Florida a 9-7 lead

Luis Calo hit a solid shot to right field, bringing in two runners and pushing Florida ahead to 9-7 in this thrilling contest.

Florida ties the game at 7-7

Liam Morrisey delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the game at seven. He was swiftly removed for a pinch-runner while the teams debated whether Florida tagged up correctly after scoring.

Confusion among Texas’ coaching staff followed, leading to an illegal pitch as the game continued.

At that moment, Calo was at bat with a 2-2 count, two outs, and runners ready to score.

Florida cuts the deficit to 7-6 with Bibaud’s hit

DJ Mieses’ attempt at first base resulted in a diving catch by Cooper Hastings. Texas attempted a double play but narrowly missed.

Subsequently, Jacob Bibaud hit a sharp grounder through the middle, making it 7-6 Florida, with the bases now loaded and just one out.

Florida’s chance to score in the sixth inning

With Kaleb Christ stepping in as the new Texas pitcher, JJ Feliciano managed to draw a walk. Garrett Rohozen then hit the ball against the wall, giving Florida the tying run in a key scoring position.

Texas extends their lead with a mix-up at home plate

Cooper Hastings swung and missed, but while the ball eluded Landon Bono, Hastings raced to first base.

Texas capitalized on the confusion and scored another run, making the score 7-5. However, Florida challenged the umpire’s call.

After review, the officials upheld the initial decision. Texas ended the inning on a ground ball, leading 7-5 as the game headed into the sixth inning. Florida needed to score twice to keep their championship hopes alive.

Texas takes a 6-5 lead

A wild pitch from Calo allowed Dylan Burke to dash home, putting Texas ahead 6-5.

Florida needed to find their stride with runners in scoring position and just one out left to keep the game close.

Texas equalizes at 5-5

After the pitcher switch, Calo’s first throw resulted in an easy pop-up caught by the catcher, but then he walked Hurst, filling the bases.

Gray Collins steps up next and sends a sharp hit straight up the middle, earning an RBI that ties the game at 5-5. This game at Lamade Stadium is turning into an exciting showdown.

Don’t overlook Texas

Gabe Steubing kicks off the fifth inning with a hit along the third-base line, energizing the crowd as he reaches first base. Although Landon Bono records a strikeout for Florida, Dylan Burke manages to hit the ball just beyond JJ Feliciano’s reach, bringing in another runner.

Florida decides to change things up, with Luis Calo stepping in as the new pitcher. Bono returns to his original position as catcher.

Florida goes ahead 5-4 as Alexander steals home

Kole Newson takes the mound after Doc Mogford requires assistance from the trainer and leaves the game.

This is a tense moment for Texas, as they need to secure two outs with runners on the corners to keep the score tied. Newson quickly strikes out a batter, but Teraj Alexander dashes in from third base to steal home. Replay reveals that Newson had turned his back to the plate, allowing Alexander to capitalize and run home.

The score is now 5-4 in favor of Florida, marking an exhilarating comeback during this fifth inning.

Florida ties the game at 4-4, Mogford appears injured

Teraj Alexander takes three balls before launching a double into the outfield. Bibaud crosses home plate, and Calo barely makes it to third after a slip, as Alexander celebrates on second base.

However, the game pauses for a concerning situation. Christopher Chikodroff’s hit comes back quickly, striking Mogford in the knee. While Florida scores to level the game at 4-4, the focus shifts to Mogford’s condition. The atmosphere is tense as trainers and coaches attend to the Texas pitcher.

Texas switches pitchers

Julian Hurst walks Luis Calo, prompting Texas coach Justin Newson to call for a pitching change. Collins embraces his starting pitcher before restructuring the team, with Doc Mogford transitioning to the mound from center field.

With the score at 4-2 and runners on the corners, Texas is in a challenging situation. Mogford faces the pressure of needing to prevent Florida’s potential comeback with just one out.

Florida adds another run to make it 4-2

Liam Morrisey may not get on base himself, but he executes a sacrifice that brings in another run, making the score 4-2, as Mieses scores and Bibaud sits on third. With Hurst near his pitch limit, he indicates he’s still good to go.

Florida poses a threat in the fifth

DJ Mieses inches closer to a home run with a powerful hit to center field, putting him at second base with a stand-up double. Julian Hurst appears to be communicating shoulder issues to the Texas coaches.

On the next pitch, Jacob Bibaud gets a single, moving Mieses to third base. While Hurst remains on the mound for now, it’s a pivotal moment in the game.

Pitching change for Florida to start the fourth inning

As anticipated, JJ Feliciano’s time as pitcher is over, with Landon Bono stepping in. Feliciano is now positioned as Florida’s shortstop.

Bono’s inaugural inning on the mound is impressive: he secures three outs using only eight pitches, featuring two fly balls captured by outfielders followed by a groundout.

Florida scores to trail 4-1

Christopher Chikodroff gets on base, breaking Julian Hurst’s impressive run, and Florida capitalizes. JJ Feliciano’s hit to center field drives Chikodroff home, narrowing the score to 4-1 and boosting Florida’s confidence.

Yet, Hurst strikes out Garrett Rohozen for another out. Although it seemed like he would strike out Landon Bono too, the ball got past catcher Caden Guffey momentarily. However, Guffey quickly recovers, spinning around to throw Bono out at first, ending the inning.

Texas doubles its lead

With two runners on base, Doc Mogford sends the ball to left field, where Jacob Bibaud dives but misses by mere inches. What looked like a routine out turned into a two-RBI double, expanding Texas’s lead to 4-0.

JJ Feliciano notches his seventh strikeout to cap off the third inning, but having thrown 84 pitches, he may be done on the mound. The Little League World Series has a strict limit of 85 pitches before requiring a substitution.

Hurst has a flawless third inning against Florida

If Florida plans to make a comeback, they must figure out Texas pitcher Julian Hurst, who is currently in control. The third inning ended with three consecutive outs, as Hurst continues to rack up the strikeouts.

Texas leads 2-0

Texas loaded the bases in the second inning, and capitalized on it. With Kaleb Christ attempting to bunt, JJ Feliciano’s pitch got away, allowing one runner to score, giving Texas the game’s first lead.

Christ remained at the plate and batted in another run with a groundout to first base. Although Feliciano eventually recorded a strikeout to end the inning, Florida now trails by two runs.

Julian Hurst’s efficient second inning

Texas pitcher Julian Hurst demonstrated great efficiency in the second inning, starting off with two groundouts and capping the inning with a strikeout. Texas is up to bat quickly after only five pitches.

Florida recovers after shaky start

James Feliciano faced a couple of passed balls, and Texas had runners in scoring position. However, the Florida pitcher found his rhythm, winding up the first inning with two strikeouts. The score remains tied after one inning.

Texas showcases defense to begin the game

Julian Hurst fields a comebacker to record a double play, followed by a quick pop-out by Garrett Rohozen. Texas then takes its turn to bat, with no runs scored yet.

Let Kids Be Kids: A Reflection on the Little League World Series

Stephen Borelli from YSL News shares his insights on the Little League World Series and the young athletes participating in this amazing event: “We count on their success and we cheer enthusiastically when they achieve it.”

While joy fills the air, there’s also emotional strain and tears. Borelli emphasizes the importance of remembering that the players are still children and suggests ways to align the tournament’s atmosphere with the players’ ages.

“We adore the Little League World Series, but there are subtle improvements we can make to lessen the pressure on the kids involved and increase inclusivity,” Borelli continues.

Understanding the Little League World Series Format

The Little League World Series features two main brackets: one for the United States and another for international teams. Each bracket conducts its separate tournament, with the winners facing off in the final championship match.

Both the U.S. and international brackets utilize a double-elimination format, allowing teams to remain in the tournament even after their first loss. The team that comes out of the elimination bracket will compete against the winner of the winners’ bracket for a chance to enter the LLWS championship.

In essence, a team must lose two games to be completely knocked out of the tournament.
