Former Aide to NY Governor Hochul Accused of Being Chinese Agent
NEW YORK − A prior aide to New York Governor Kathy Hochul has been charged with operating as an undisclosed agent for the Chinese government, according to federal prosecutors based in Brooklyn.
Linda Sun, 41, who served as Hochul’s deputy chief of staff, was taken into custody on Tuesday and is set to appear in court later that day. Her husband, Chris Hu, is also facing legal charges.
Sun has held prominent positions under both Hochul and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, as reported by local media.
U.S. Attorney Breon Peace stated that Sun exploited her role in state government to promote the goals of the Chinese government and the Chinese Communist Party. “The illegal activities reportedly benefited the defendant’s family immensely, amounting to millions of dollars,” he added.
While in her government role, it is alleged that Sun obstructed Taiwanese government representatives from meeting state officials and attempted to organize a visit to China for a high-ranking New York state official.
In return, Chinese government representatives reportedly facilitated transactions worth millions for Hu, who was engaged in businesses in China.
“Sun misused her influence among executives to secretly promote the agendas of the PRC and CCP, posing a direct threat to our nation’s security,” said Assistant Director Christine Curtis, who is acting as the head of the FBI’s New York office.
Some of the gifts she received included Nanjing-style salted ducks, which were prepared by a personal chef of a Chinese government official and delivered to Sun’s parents’ home, according to prosecutors.
At this time, attorneys representing Sun and Hu have not responded to requests for comments.
