She was murdered in her wedding gown in 2012. The FBI has just apprehended her husband.
In 2012, just two days after her marriage, Estrella Carrera was discovered dead in the bathtub of her apartment in Illinois.
Still clad in her wedding dress, reports indicated that she had suffered over a dozen stab wounds.
Shortly after, a judge in Cook County, Illinois, issued a warrant for the arrest of Carrera’s husband, Arnoldo Jimenez, related to the murder in her Burbank residence.
After nearly 13 years eluding capture, the FBI recently reported that Jimenez has been arrested in Mexico for Carrera’s “horrific” murder.
At the time of his arrest, he had been listed as one of the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted fugitives.
“The FBI and Burbank Police Department were dedicated to achieving justice for Estrella Carrera and her family,” stated Burbank Police Deputy Chief William Casey following Jimenez’s arrest in Monterrey, located in the northeastern Mexican state of Nuevo León.
The city is roughly 100 miles from the U.S. border.
What transpired with Estrella Carrera?
On May 13, 2012, Carrera was discovered deceased in her bathroom at her Burbank residence.
This area is part of Cook County, just outside the southwestern edge of Chicago.
The FBI reported that on May 12, 2012 – the day after their wedding – Jimenez is alleged to have fatally stabbed his wife in his 2006 black Maserati. An FBI spokesperson informed CBS News that Jimenez stabbed her 18 times.
Afterwards, he reportedly moved her body into the bathtub of her apartment, according to the FBI.
The exact motive behind the murder remains unclear.
Who was Estrella Carrera?
Carrera was just 26 years old when her life was tragically cut short.
Her obituary highlighted that she was a devoted mother to two children, a son and a daughter, one of whom was fathered by Jimenez.
At the time of her passing, The Chicago Tribune reported that the children were merely 2 and 9 years old.
YSL News has reached out to her family for further comments.
Originally from Texas and residing in Chicago, Cook County Circuit Court documents indicate that Jimenez was charged with first-degree murder, and a warrant for his arrest was issued on May 15, 2012.
On May 17, a federal arrest warrant was also issued by the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois after Jimenez was charged with illegally fleeing to evade prosecution.
Authorities at that time suspected he may have escaped to the Mexican states of Durango or Tamaulipas.
Arnoldo Jimenez awaits extradition proceedings in Mexico
The FBI, along with its legal attaché in Mexico City and federal court officials, worked together to locate Jimenez, who was captured by agents from the Fiscalía General de la República (Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office) in partnership with Interpol.
Jimenez remained in custody as of Wednesday, waiting for his extradition hearing, as reported by the FBI to YSL News.
The date for his hearing was not immediately determined on Wednesday.
Officials stated that he may not be returned to Illinois for “at least 9 months” as he is contesting his extradition.
It is currently unclear whether he has secured legal representation.
