FTC Refunds Possible for Pyrex Glass Measuring Cup Purchasers

If you purchased Pyrex glass measuring cups, you might receive a refund from the FTC.

Consumers who bought specific Pyrex measuring cups online in recent years may qualify for a refund.

The Federal Trade Commission has revealed that a total of $88,000 will be refunded to those who purchased glass measuring cups that were marketed as “Made in USA” but were actually imported from China. Instant Brands, the company behind Pyrex kitchen products, agreed to terms in 2023 after the FTC initiated legal action over these misleading claims.

During the pandemic in 2020, there was a surge in demand for these popular glass measuring cups. To meet this demand, Instant Brands moved some production to China but continued to promote them as U.S.-made.

Here are the details on how to check if your measuring cup is affected and how to claim your refund.

Imported Pyrex cups were labeled as ‘Made in USA’

For a long time, Instant Brands promoted its Pyrex products as manufactured in the U.S. with the “Made in USA” label.

However, as home baking popularity surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, the company found it challenging to meet the high demand for its glass measuring cups sold on Amazon. Consequently, the FTC alleges that some Pyrex measuring cups were produced in China from March 2021 to May 2022.

Despite this, the products were still advertised on Amazon as “Made in USA,” even though the cups themselves were clearly marked as “Made in China,” according to the FTC.

The FTC took action against Instant Brands in 2023, stating that more than 110,000 units of these Chinese-made measuring cup sets were sold to consumers in the U.S. Instant Brands later accepted a settlement that included stopping these misleading advertisements and paying a fine of $129,416, according to the FTC.

“Consumers depend on brands to provide accurate ‘Made in USA’ claims,” said Samuel Levine, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, in a past statement. “If brands shift their manufacturing outside the U.S., even for a short time, they need to update their advertising to reflect that.”

A message was sent to Instant Brands on Monday morning, but a response has not yet been received.
