Fuel Mix-Up Hits Circle K Customers Hard with Expensive Vehicle Repairs

Drivers face expensive repairs after diesel and unleaded fuel mix-up at Circle K near Cleveland

At a Circle K in Avon, Ohio, diesel was mistakenly stored in an underground tank linked to a gasoline pump, affecting 14 drivers.

Patrons of a Circle K in northeast Ohio recently experienced a fuel mix-up where instead of the unleaded fuel they selected, their vehicles were filled with diesel.

This incident was first reported on Friday by WIOIO in Cleveland and took place on January 19 in Avon, Ohio, which is approximately 20 miles west of Cleveland.

In a statement released on Monday to YSL News, Circle K confirmed the error and mentioned they are currently assisting customers who have submitted insurance claims related to the incident.

Using diesel fuel, intended for specialized engines typically found in commercial vehicles, in cars designed for gasoline can lead to serious damage. Local news sources, such as WKYC and WOIO, have reported that customers affected by this switch might be facing repair bills amounting to thousands of dollars.

Diesel fuel mistakenly placed in unleaded tanks at Ohio Circle K

The issue arose due to the accidental delivery of diesel fuel into the incorrect underground storage tanks, as Circle K indicated in their statement. Unleaded fuel was unintentionally added to the diesel tanks at the same time.

After realizing the problem, Circle K temporarily shut down the affected pumps, but not before at least 14 customers filled their tanks with diesel.

The company has committed to reimbursing customers for any repair costs related to the fueling mistake after thoroughly investigating and validating the claims.

“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused to our customers and are dedicated to assisting them with their claims,” Circle K stated. “Additionally, we have drained and replaced the fuel in the problematic storage tanks, and the pumps are now back in service.”

Drivers share experiences of costly repairs

One driver who fueled his 2022 Jeep Wagoneer on January 19 at the Circle K revealed to WOIO that no issues were apparent until the next day.

When he tried to start his vehicle, it “began sputtering. Warning lights flashed, and there was a large cloud of white smoke,” he recounted.

His vehicle was towed to a Jeep dealership, where mechanics discovered diesel fuel in the gas tank and fuel lines. While the actual repair process is straightforward, the costs are significant: flushing the gas tank, replacing spark plugs, and cleaning the system is expected to exceed $1,000.

Another pickup truck owner, who wished to remain anonymous, reached out to the television station, stating that his diesel vehicle also required repairs after he unintentionally filled it with unleaded gasoline.
