Gardner Minshew injury update: Raiders QB suffers collarbone injury, per report

The Las Vegas Raiders were trying to mount a comeback against the Denver Broncos when quarterback Gardner Minshew had to leave the game due to an injury.

Minshew got hurt after being taken down during a first-and-10 play in the fourth quarter. While scrambling to evade defenders, he was tackled by Cody Barton and Jonathon Cooper from the Broncos.

During the tackle, Minshew landed awkwardly, forcing his left shoulder into the ground. He was visibly in pain and remained on the field as the Raiders’ medical team treated him.

Here’s what we know about Minshew’s injury:

Gardner Minshew suffers season-ending injury

Minshew has a broken collarbone, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, resulting from the Raiders’ 29-19 defeat against the Broncos in Week 12. This injury means he will miss the rest of the season.

The Raiders confirmed that Minshew sustained a left shoulder injury during the game, initially labeling him as “questionable” to return, but he did not play again after coming off the field.

Raiders coach Antonio Pierce provided a short but grim update on Minshew’s condition in the postgame press conference.

“It doesn’t look good,” Pierce said to the media.

The injury happened when Minshew fell with both his and Barton’s weight on his left, non-throwing shoulder. Medical personnel evaluated him on the field as he showed signs of discomfort.

While Minshew managed to get up after some time, he walked straight to the locker room, which the commentators noted was a “bad sign” for his condition.

Before leaving the game, Minshew completed 24 of 42 passes for 230 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

Who is Gardner Minshew’s backup on Raiders depth chart?

Desmond Ridder took over for Minshew following his injury. Ridder completed 5 of 10 passes for 64 yards but also lost a critical fumble in Sunday’s game.

Normally, Aidan O’Connell would be the backup quarterback, but he is currently on injured reserve due to a thumb injury. This is why Ridder, who joined the Raiders from the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad on October 21, stepped in for Minshew on that day.

Ridder was the only backup quarterback available on Sunday, as Carter Bradley, the third-string QB, is on the practice squad and was not promoted for the Week 12 matchup. Unless O’Connell is cleared to return from IR, Ridder and Bradley are expected to lead the Raiders’ quarterback unit into Week 13.

Gardner Minshew stats

Minshew had a 57.1% completion rate, with 230 yards, one touchdown, and one interception against the Broncos in Week 12.

Before this game, Minshew had completed 67.4% of his passes for 1,783 yards, with eight touchdowns and nine interceptions over eight starts. His record stood at 2-6 before this game, and now he falls to 2-7 after the Raiders’ 29-19 loss.
