More than 40 individuals affected by gastrointestinal illness outbreak on luxury cruise
Over 40 individuals have fallen ill due to a gastrointestinal outbreak on a Silversea Cruises vessel.
Out of 681 guests on board, 38 reported illness during the current voyage of the Silver Ray, along with five crew members, as stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The primary symptoms experienced included diarrhea and abdominal cramps.
The specific cause of the outbreak remains unidentified. The Silver Ray left Callao, Peru on January 4 and is expected to arrive at Port Everglades in Florida on Monday, according to CruiseMapper.
The CDC noted that Silversea has implemented enhanced sanitation measures and has isolated the affected guests and crew, among various other actions. The cruise line has not yet responded to requests for comment.
This incident marks the second recorded outbreak of gastrointestinal illness on cruises that have crossed the CDC’s threshold for public notification in 2025. Earlier this month, around 30 crew members from a Sea Cloud Cruises ship were presumed to have fallen ill due to ciguatera poisoning.
In the prior year, the CDC reported 18 outbreaks on cruise ships, with the majority attributed to norovirus.
