Georgia vs Texas football: Live score, updates, highlights from Week 8 matchup

Throughout its storied past, Texas football has been part of numerous unforgettable matchups known as “The Game of the Century,” including the memorable 1969 victory over Arkansas and the iconic championship win against top-ranked USC at the close of the 2005 season.

This Saturday’s clash between Texas and Georgia may not reach that historic status, but it certainly holds significant importance.

Set at the Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, the showdown features No. 1 Texas against No. 4 Georgia and is one of the most eagerly awaited games of the 2024 college football season. The outcome will play a vital role in the quest for an SEC championship and a coveted position in the 12-team College Football Playoff.

After suffering a loss to Alabama earlier in the season, the Bulldogs have little room for error moving forward. Losing to Texas wouldn’t eliminate their playoff prospects, but it would complicate their path significantly.

This will be only the third top-five matchup in the century-long history of Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, and the first since 2006, when No. 2 Texas, led by freshman quarterback Colt McCoy, fell to No. 1 Ohio State 24-7.

Following a dominant 34-3 win over archrival Oklahoma in last Saturday’s Red River Rivalry, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian has the Longhorns off to a 6-0 start for the first time since 2009. A victory over Kirby Smart’s Georgia could bolster the team’s aspirations for a national title.

Georgia vs Texas live updates

Third quarter: Georgia 23, Texas 8

Texas finally scores

After 34 frustrating minutes, Texas finally puts points on the board.

Following a successful 4th-and-1 conversion from the Georgia 46-yard line, the Longhorns move down the field. A pass interference penalty on an incomplete pass leads to a touchdown, with Quinn Ewers connecting with Isaiah Bond for a two-yard score.

Now behind by 23, Steve Sarkisian decides to attempt a two-point conversion, which succeeds as Ewers and Bond link up again. The score now stands at 23-8 with 10:57 left in the third quarter.

Quinn Ewers returns for Texas, replacing Arch Manning

After being sidelined for a couple of plays, Quinn Ewers is back under center for Texas, taking over from Arch Manning. He starts with solid field position after Georgia’s squib kick is recovered by the Longhorns at their own 45-yard line, marking the beginning of the second half.

Georgia vs Texas stats

With Georgia maintaining a strong 23-0 lead, here’s how the stats shaped up in the first half:

  • Total yards: Georgia 170, Texas 38
  • Passing yards: Georgia 100, Texas 36
  • Rushing yards: Georgia 70, Texas 2

  • Turnovers: Texas 3, Georgia 2
  • Penalties: Georgia 3-35, Texas 4-19
  • Sacks: Georgia 5 (for 49 yards), Texas 0

Overall, it’s an uneven matchup.

Halftime: Georgia 23, Texas 0

Georgia scores just before halftime

The Bulldogs capitalize on a strip sack of Arch Manning, with Peyton Woodring nailing his third field goal of the night from 44 yards to extend Georgia’s lead to 23-0 at halftime.

Kirby Smart’s squad completely dominated the first half.

Georgia strips Arch Manning and recovers the fumble

Texas seemed to be building some momentum with Arch Manning leading the offense into Georgia’s zone, but back-to-back sacks halted their progress.

The second sack proved costly. Before Manning could make a throw, Damon Wilson II stripped the ball, and Georgia recovered the fumble at the Texas 30-yard line with just 25 seconds left in the half.

Texas forces a punt

After Georgia scored on four consecutive drives, Texas finally halts them with a punt. The Longhorns stopped Trevor Etienne on a crucial 3rd-and-1 just outside the Georgia 29-yard line following a two-minute warning.

A 49-yard punt from Georgia places Texas at the 20-yard line with 1:43 remaining in the first half.

Arch Manning enters the game for Texas, taking over from Quinn Ewers

This substitution had been anticipated just moments before.

has finally happened.

Arch Manning, the much-anticipated Texas redshirt freshman quarterback and the nephew of legendary quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning, has stepped onto the field to take over for Quinn Ewers, much to the delight of the Longhorns fans in Austin.

After a facemask penalty on a Manning run brings Texas to their own 45-yard line, the drive ultimately stalls and they fail to advance past their own 48. The Longhorns end up punting the ball into the end zone, allowing Georgia to take possession at their 20-yard line with roughly three minutes left in the first half.

Georgia kicks a field goal to stretch lead to 20

Peyton Woodring successfully converts a field goal from 48 yards, increasing Georgia’s lead to 20-0 just five minutes before halftime.

Arch Manning is warming up for Texas

After yet another three-and-out results in a Texas punt, the most well-known backup quarterback in college football, Arch Manning, begins to warm up on the sidelines.

Quinn Ewers has thrown only 6 completions out of 12 attempts for a mere 17 yards, while the Texas offense has tallied just 15 total yards.

Georgia scores another touchdown

Georgia has taken advantage of two Texas turnovers, scoring 14 points as a result. A 17-yard pass from Carson Beck to Dominic Lovett propels Georgia to the Texas 15-yard line, where Trevor Etienne finishes the drive powerfully with a 15-yard touchdown run, plowing through the Texas defense.

With that, the Bulldogs lead 17-0, leaving fans eager to see how Texas will respond—especially since they haven’t faced a situation quite like this all season.

Georgia intercepts Quinn Ewers

As Texas struggles, they make a significant mistake. Quinn Ewers misfires on a pass intended for Matthew Golden, which is caught instead by Georgia’s Daylen Everette, the same player who forced Ewers’ fumble in the first quarter that led to a Bulldogs touchdown.

Georgia will now take over at the Texas 34-yard line, looking to extend their lead further.

Georgia extends its lead with a field goal

The Bulldogs capitalize on Evans’ return and their advantageous field position. Although Georgia manages only 13 yards over seven plays, it is enough to set up Peyton Woodring for a successful 33-yard field goal.

Texas punts again

A holding penalty on the kickoff nullifies a 64-yard return for Texas, pushing them back to their own eight-yard line. Unable to gain any ground, the Longhorns go three-and-out.

To make matters worse, Georgia’s Anthony Evans III returns the subsequent punt 19 yards, placing Texas in a difficult position at their own 28-yard line.

Across their initial four drives, the Longhorns have managed just 14 total yards.

End of the first quarter: Georgia 7, Texas 0

Georgia secures the game’s first touchdown

The Bulldogs take full advantage of Texas’ costly turnover, with Trevor Etienne rushing to the right for a two-yard touchdown following a pitch from Beck, marking the game’s first score.

This is the first time this season that Texas has been down by more than a field goal.

Quinn Ewers fumbles, giving Georgia prime field position

On a crucial third down at the Texas 28-yard line, Quinn Ewers is blindsided by Georgia’s Daylen Everette, resulting in a fumble that the Bulldogs recover after several attempts from both teams to gain control of the ball.

Georgia seizes the moment, taking over at the Texas 13-yard line, ready to score.

There have been three turnovers between both teams already.

Carson Beck throws yet another interception

Just under 12 minutes into the game, Carson Beck throws his second interception of the night for Georgia. The second interception wasn’t entirely his fault, as the ball deflected off Lawson Luckie’s hands before being intercepted by Texas’ Jahdae Barron.

This interception could prove costly, as it happened deep in Texas territory, with Barron catching it at the Longhorns’ five-yard line. Prior to the pick, Georgia had executed a nine-play, 62-yard drive that had them in position for a potential short field goal.

Texas intercepts Carson Beck

On a second down from their own 23-yard line, Georgia’s Carson Beck throws a miscalculated pass that lands in Texas’ Andrew Mukuba’s hands at the Georgia 42.

This marks Beck’s sixth interception in the last seven games.

However, this mistake has minimal impact, as the Longhorns can only gain one yard before punting the ball back to Georgia, who will start their drive from their own 20 after a touchback.

Georgia goes three-and-out on first possession

The Bulldogs manage just four yards on their opening drive. Nevertheless, a 58-yard punt by Brett Thorson pins Texas at their own 13-yard line as they begin their next possession.

Will Uga Travel for the Georgia vs Texas Game?

A significant off-field topic in the lead-up to Saturday’s game was whether Georgia’s famous live bulldog mascot, Uga, would be accompanying the team to Austin for a reunion with Bevo, Texas’ live longhorn mascot, following their previous encounter at the 2019 Sugar Bowl.

The answer is no; Uga’s handler, Charles Seiler, informed the Athens Banner-Herald that the cherished bulldog will not be making the trip to Texas.

“This dog is only two months old,” Seiler explained. “He hasn’t traveled by plane or bus yet. The journey is simply too long for us.”

Predictions for Georgia vs Texas

Thomas Jones, Austin American-Statesman: Texas 35, Georgia 27

The Bulldogs have not been playing to their usual defensive standards. Traveling to Austin to face a highly motivated Longhorn team is not an ideal situation for them.

Marc Weiszer, Athens Banner-Herald: Georgia 27, Texas 26

Texas is experiencing its first 6-0 start since 2009, but they haven’t faced any teams currently ranked in the top 20 of the ESPN SP+ ratings. The Bulldogs are more desperate after their loss to Alabama, but that could work in both directions. Betting on Texas seems wise, but I choose Georgia, believing they will play at their peak with their best players stepping up. Coach Smart has often inspired his team under pressure.

Bill Bender, The Sporting News: Texas 30, Georgia 24

The Bulldogs have only been underdogs twice under Kirby Smart, which is a precarious situation. The Longhorns are the more complete team this season, ranking in the top 10 for both scoring offense and defense. Georgia has forced merely five turnovers this season and lacks a consistent running game. Texas averages 5.1 yards per carry, and if they can maintain four yards or more, it will pose significant challenges for Georgia. Underdogs have covered the spread in both top-five matchups this season, but I still believe the Longhorns will win by a touchdown.
