Giants Seal Matt Chapman’s Comeback Season with Significant Contract Extension
The San Francisco Giants have proactively signed All-Star third baseman Matt Chapman to a six-year, $151 million contract extension, anticipating that he might opt out of his current contract and become a free agent. This decision ensures he remains with the team.
This agreement also entails a full no-trade clause, with no opt-out provisions, as confirmed by a source familiar with the contract who requested anonymity due to the Giants not yet releasing contract specifics.
A press conference has been set for Thursday at 1:30 p.m. ET.
Chapman will earn $25 million annually through 2030, alongside a $1 million buyout.
Previously, Chapman entered free agency last winter, eventually signing a three-year, $54 million deal with two options on March 3 during spring training.
At 31, Chapman has been the Giants’ standout player this season, boasting team highs of 22 home runs, 69 RBIs, 90 runs, 33 doubles, and 126 hits. He also excels defensively, leading all third basemen with 13 defensive runs saved and has been awarded four Gold Glove titles.
Chapman is only the second player in the franchise’s history to post at least 30 doubles, 20 home runs, and 10 stolen bases in a single season, a feat last achieved by Freddie Lindstrom in 1930.
Although Chapman’s performance hasn’t propelled the Giants (68-72) into playoff contention, he has expressed a strong desire to spend the rest of his career in a Giants uniform, a sentiment echoed by the team, concluding the deal around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
With Chapman’s signing, the top third baseman available in free agency this coming winter is expected to be Alex Bregman from the Houston Astros.
