Jardin Gilbert’s targeting foul contributes to USC’s game-winning touchdown against LSU
In the season-opener on Sunday, LSU football defensive back Jardin Gilbert incurred a significant targeting penalty against USC.
Gilbert made contact with Trojans wide receiver Kyron Hudson using the top of his helmet, striking Hudson’s helmet after he caught a 20-yard pass from Miller Moss. Hudson secured the catch at the 27-yard line with just 18 seconds remaining in a tied game at 20-20.
This penalty moved the ball to the 13-yard line, setting up Woody Marks to score the winning touchdown on the following play. As a result, Gilbert was ejected from the game and will serve a suspension for the first half of LSU’s Week 2 matchup against Nicholls.
In the subsequent play for LSU, USC’s Mason Cobb intercepted a pass from quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, sealing the victory for the Trojans.
