The highly anticipated film “Gladiator II,” directed by Ridley Scott, is scheduled to hit theaters this week.

This sequel follows the critically acclaimed “Gladiator,” released in 2000, which also featured Scott as director and starred Russell Crowe (as Maximus) and Joaquin Phoenix (as Commodus).

In this new installment, Paul Mescal plays Lucius, an enslaved man turned gladiator, mentored by Denzel Washington’s character, Macrinus, who is driven by ambition.

The story occurs in Ancient Rome, set 16 years after Maximus (who is Lucius’ uncle) famously defeated Commodus in combat and became a legend before his death. With his home conquered by invading emperors, Lucius finds himself captured and forced into the Colosseum. Furthermore, following the tragic loss of his wife, Lucius is on a quest for vengeance against Acacius, portrayed by Pedro Pascal.
