Glen Powell addresses speculation about stepping in for Tom Cruise in ‘Mission: Impossible’
Glen Powell believes he can never fill Tom Cruise’s shoes.
While appearing on Pat McAfee’s live ESPN show on Tuesday, the “Twisters” star reacted to rumors suggesting that Cruise desired Powell to take over his role in the “Mission: Impossible” series.
Though Powell was in costume for his upcoming film “The Running Man” and thus not shown on camera, McAfee encouraged him, saying, “We just want to call and say congratulations, brother.” Powell humorously dismissed the speculation: “My mom would never let me do that.”
The 36-year-old actor also jokingly turned down the idea of performing stunts at Cruise’s level, saying, “That’s the worst job in town, everyone knows that. It’s a death trap.”
Powell has established himself as an action star with recent performances in films such as “Twisters,” where he portrayed the daring storm chaser Tyler Owens, and “Hit Man,” where he took on the role of Gary Johnson, a hired fake assassin.
Furthermore, he starred alongside Cruise in the 2022 blockbuster “Top Gun: Maverick” as Lt. Jake “Hangman” Seresin. Powell, who has long been a fan of the original “Top Gun,” previously talked about losing the opportunity to play the role of Nick “Goose” Bradshaw’s son, a role which ultimately went to another actor. Instead, Cruise crafted the exciting character of the daring pilot Hangman for him.
Currently, Powell is set to feature in the sci-fi film “The Running Man,” directed by Edgar Wright and co-starring Josh Brolin, which is based on the novel by Stephen King.
Meanwhile, Cruise, now 62, shows no signs of slowing down. He starred in the 2023 movie “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” where he continued to showcase his talent for performing daring stunts. He is also preparing for the eighth film in the franchise, titled “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” expected to release in 2025.
