Robert Griffin III: ‘Feeling Grateful’ for His Time at ESPN Following Dismissal

Just under two weeks after his termination from ESPN, Robert Griffin III expressed his gratitude for the time he spent at the network.

“I am incredibly grateful for all the experiences I had at ESPN,” Griffin stated in an interview with YSL News Sports.

The former NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner from Baylor was let go on August 15, according to initial reports from The Athletic. The reports mentioned that Griffin had two years left on his contract and would receive his seven-figure salary for that duration.

While at ESPN, Griffin participated in the network’s “Monday Night Countdown” show that broadcasts prior to “Monday Night Football,” and he also analyzed college football games. However, he was substituted on the “Monday Night Countdown” team by the newly hired former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce just before his unexpected departure.

“I truly enjoyed my time there, and I will miss the behind-the-scenes staff who often go unappreciated. It’s usually the on-screen talent who get all the accolades. But I remain very thankful for my journey there,” Griffin remarked.

What’s Next for RGIII?

Griffin is now a free agent and has not indicated any plans to join another media outlet; instead, he’s focusing on his podcast, “Outta Pocket with RGIII.” He mentioned that he will be “traveling and devoting his time to narrating stories accurately.”

“I have no idea what the future holds. Whether it be in college football, the NFL, or broadcasting, I’ll go wherever God guides me,” he added.

Griffin and “Sunday NFL Countdown” host Samantha Ponder were among the recent layoffs at ESPN. Reports suggest that both were let go due to annual budget assessments at Disney, which owns ESPN. Recently, ESPN announced that Mike Greenberg will take over as the new host of “Sunday NFL Countdown,” joining Tedy Bruschi, Randy Moss, Rex Ryan, Alex Smith, and NFL insider Adam Schefter.
