‘Rust’ armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed may accept plea deal for separate firearm charge
Reports indicate that Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer for the film “Rust,” is likely to agree to a plea deal concerning a 2023 case of illegal firearm carrying.
In November, Gutierrez-Reed faced charges for carrying a firearm unlawfully in a bar in New Mexico. Currently, she is serving 18 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter related to the tragic shooting incident on the set of “Rust.” Reports from People and Variety suggest she has reached a preliminary plea agreement regarding this additional felony charge.
According to the reports, she brought a firearm into the bar in October 2021, just weeks prior to the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the “Rust” set. A grand jury indicted her on this charge last fall.
Reports also state that Gutierrez-Reed has agreed to a sentence of 18 months probation for the gun charge as part of the plea deal.
In March, Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty in the accidental killing of Hutchins on set in 2021. A jury determined that she exhibited criminal negligence by mistakenly loading a live bullet into the gun that Alec Baldwin was holding.
Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer remarked to Gutierrez-Reed during sentencing, “The word remorse means a deep regret stemming from guilt for past actions. That’s not you.”
In July, Baldwin’s charge of involuntary manslaughter was surprisingly dropped by Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer on the third day of his trial. The judge cited that prosecutors and law enforcement had withheld crucial evidence that could have aided the actor’s defense.
Shortly after, Gutierrez-Reed’s legal representatives filed a motion requesting the dismissal of her conviction based on this ruling, according to reports from Rolling Stone and The Associated Press.
