Harris to unveil household cost-cutting plan in policy speech on Friday
WASHINGTON − Vice President Kamala Harris is set to give her first significant policy speech as the Democratic candidate for president this Friday, focusing on strategies to help reduce household expenses, a top priority for many voters.
Harris is heading to Raleigh, North Carolina, a state that Democrats are optimistic about flipping in the upcoming election, to present her plan aimed at “reducing costs for middle-class families and addressing corporate price-gouging,” according to a campaign official.
This event has not been previously announced, and Harris had to cancel a recent appearance in North Carolina due to Tropical Storm Debby.
The choice of North Carolina for her speech indicates a growing confidence in Harris’s campaign momentum with less than three months remaining before the Nov. 5 election against Republican Donald Trump.
While the campaign considers states like Pennsylvania as crucial for victory, North Carolina presents a tougher challenge, having only supported two Democratic presidential candidates in the last fifty years.
Her upcoming speech will be scrutinized to assess how her approach varies from President Joe Biden, whose economic initiatives have faced criticism from voters frustrated over the high costs of living, including housing, healthcare, groceries, and fuel.
On Saturday, Harris expressed her support for abolishing taxes on tips, a stance resembling that of Trump. She will also join President Biden for an event at the White House on Thursday, focusing on health care expenses.
Previously, when she served as California’s attorney general from 2011 to 2016, Harris took on “corporate greed and price gouging” by challenging various industries, including pharmaceuticals and oil companies, as noted by the campaign official.
According to the campaign official, Harris “understands that costs are excessively high and will prioritize tackling inflation from Day One.”
This strategy marks a clear contrast with Trump, who has advocated for deregulating industries such as finance and energy as a means to reduce costs and encourage growth.
Nationally, Harris leads Trump by five percentage points, with 42% support compared to 37%, according to an Ipsos poll released on Thursday, increasing her advantage since a Reuters/Ipsos survey conducted on July 22-23.
