New Research Shows Plugged Wells and Decreased Injection Rates Diminish Induced Earthquake Occurrences in Oklahoma

Wastewater injection resulting from oil and gas production in Oklahoma caused a dramatic rise in seismic activity in the state between 2009 and 2015. But regulatory efforts to backfill some injection wells with cement and reduce injection volumes have been effective in lowering the state's induced earthquake rate, according to a new study. Harrison Butker Injury Update: Chiefs Kicker Out for Game Against Bills, Heading to IR

The Kansas City Chiefs will be missing another critical player as they aim to maintain their undefeated status this Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.

Kicker Harrison Butker has been placed on injured reserve due to a knee injury on his left leg, sidelining him for at least the next four games. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Butker underwent surgery to fix a meniscus tear, with a potential return anticipated towards the end of the regular season and into the playoffs.

Butker shared on social media that his surgery on Friday was a success, stating it “went great!”

To manage kicking duties in his absence, Kansas City has signed Spencer Shrader from the practice squad of the New York Jets.

Butker, who boasts an impressive career field goal success rate of 89.21% — ranking him third in NFL history — has successfully converted 18 of 20 field goal attempts this season, with both misses occurring on attempts longer than 50 yards.

Spencer Shrader went undrafted after attending Notre Dame and previously kicked for the Indianapolis Colts, where he successfully converted all three extra-point attempts in Week 1 before being released. He joined the Jets’ practice squad on October 30 and made it to the active roster for last week’s 31-6 defeat to the Arizona Cardinals, during which he successfully made two field goals.

The Chiefs are already dealing with the absence of top wide receivers Rashee Rice and Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and now face further injuries before their game against the Bills. Running back Isiah Pacheco has been practicing in a limited capacity after having his return window activated for 21 days, yet coach Andy Reid mentioned that he is not expected to play on Sunday as he recovers from a fractured fibula that has kept him out since Week 2. In contrast, wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster appears to be on course to play, having fully participated in Thursday’s practice despite his hamstring injury.
