Opinion: Harris gracefully acknowledges defeat to Trump. So does that mean we won’t be storming the Capitol?
I haven’t heard Harris, her running mate Tim Walz, or any Democratic officials claim that Republicans cheated or that the election was unfair. What’s going on?
With dignity and humility, Vice President Kamala Harris addressed the nation on Wednesday, admitting her loss in the 2024 presidential election to the reelected Donald Trump.
“We must acknowledge the outcome of this election,” Harris stated during her speech at Howard University. “Today, I congratulated President-elect Trump on his victory and assured him that we will assist with the transition, ensuring a peaceful transfer of power.”
First of all, I had forgotten that political concessions could actually happen in America. But more importantly, does this mean that those of us on the liberal side won’t have the chance to storm the Capitol?
Harris conceded so effortlessly I didn’t even get a chance to join in a rebellion
Many trustworthy Republicans informed me that the Trump-supporting rioters who breached the Capitol after Trump’s last election loss were a mix of “patriots” and “tourists.” I was genuinely looking forward to becoming a patriot-tourist myself. I even bought a pitchfork, which now I’m left wondering whether to return or find some other use for it.
This is all quite puzzling. I haven’t heard Harris, her running mate Tim Walz, or any Democratic lawmakers accuse the Republicans of cheating, nor have they claimed the election was rigged or yelled slogans like “STOP THE STEAL!” or “CRIME OF THE CENTURY!”
After the 2020 election, given how Republicans reacted, I assumed it was our patriotic duty to deny the legitimacy of a free and fair election, to yell and make a scene, and perhaps even don bizarre costumes while confronting law enforcement.
Did I somehow miss the memo stating that this behavior was no longer acceptable?
What kind of modern-day presidential candidate acknowledges defeat?
I honestly can’t figure out what Harris is thinking. She stood up on Wednesday and declared: “An essential principle of American democracy is that when we lose an election, we accept the outcome. This principle, just like any other, sets democracy apart from monarchy or oppression.”
Madam Vice President, it was clearly established after President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory that any defeated presidential candidate who truly cares about this country must spend the following four years insisting they actually won, perpetually proclaiming the election was stolen despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, and profiting off their supporters by selling them low-quality merchandise at outrageously high prices while manipulating them with falsehoods and appealing to their deepest fears.
Trump has shown us that refusing to concede can lead to victory
Yet here you are, openly admitting defeat, respectfully recognizing the voice of the American people, and promoting a peaceful transition of power.
How can you expect to win future elections if you adhere to democratic principles and prioritize the well-being of others over your own ambitions?
I’d be angrier about Harris’ display of integrity, but right now I’m busy assembling a Lego replica of the U.S. Capitol, which I plan to storm in the comfort of my own home.
