Harvey Weinstein hospitalized after ‘worrisome’ blood test
The disgraced film executive underwent emergency heart surgery in September.
Harvey Weinstein has been admitted to the hospital for treatment following a “worrisome” blood test result that necessitated urgent medical care, as reported by his attorney on Monday.
Weinstein’s legal team has previously disclosed that he is suffering from various health issues, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and chronic myeloid leukemia (a type of bone marrow cancer). In September, he was quickly transferred to the hospital from Rikers Island jail for heart surgery. Just two months earlier, he had been hospitalized at Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward due to multiple health problems, including a COVID-19 infection and double pneumonia.
A jury had previously found Weinstein guilty of sexually assaulting ex-production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006 and of raping aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013. These cases are part of over 80 women who have accused him of sexual misconduct.
For his New York case, Weinstein received a 23-year prison sentence, along with an additional 16 years for a separate case in California. However, the New York Court of Appeals annulled the earlier conviction in April. Weinstein will face a retrial while also confronting a new sexual assault allegation regarding an unnamed woman from 2006.
Harvey Weinstein threatens legal action over medical neglect in jail
In a notice filed last Tuesday with the New York City Comptroller’s Office, Weinstein’s legal team accused Rikers Island and Bellevue Hospital personnel of not providing proper medical care while he was incarcerated.
The claim, filed by attorney Imran H. Ansari, names the City of New York, the New York City Department of Correction, Rikers Island Correctional Facility, and Bellevue Hospital as potentially liable parties, with a request for $5 million in damages.
Ansari alleged that correction staff and medical workers failed to adequately manage Weinstein’s thyroid disorder and white blood cell counts, which caused his health to “fall significantly.” He noted that Weinstein previously developed pneumonia due to being housed in extremely cold conditions and contracted COVID-19 due to a lack of a sterile medical environment.
Moreover, Ansari reported that Weinstein allegedly went “months without receiving any cancer treatment.”
“While in the custody of Rikers Island Correctional Facility, (Weinstein’s) medical conditions deteriorated significantly, unreasonably, and dangerously, leading to numerous instances where (Weinstein) feared for his well-being,” according to Ansari’s filing. “Officials were aware of (Weinstein’s) medical state yet failed to provide adequate medical treatment purposefully, recklessly, and/or carelessly.”
Jeanette Merrill, assistant vice president of communications & external affairs for NYC Health + Hospitals/Correctional Health Services, stated in a message to YSL News that “NYC Health + Hospitals/Correctional Health Services continues to collaborate with the Department of Correction to guarantee that inmates receive high-quality health care on Rikers Island, including those with complex medical and mental health needs.”
In a statement to YSL News, Ansari noted that Weinstein “has endured greatly from the appalling conditions on Rikers Island,” mentioning that he found the former film executive with “blood on his prison clothing” and in unclean attire during his most recent visit.
“I questioned whether I was in a prison facility mandated to uphold constitutional standards or a gulag where inmates are treated like animals,” Ansari reflected.
