Iconic IndyCar Driver Helio Castroneves to Participate in the 2025 Daytona 500
Helio Castroneves has solidified his status in motorsport as one of the greatest IndyCar drivers. He made history in 2021 by winning the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing,” the Indianapolis 500, for the fourth time, tying the record for the most victories in this prestigious event.
Now, the legendary driver is set to take on the 2025 Daytona 500.
Castroneves, who is 49 years old, will join the NASCAR Cup Series for the first time during practice at Daytona International Speedway starting February 12. He will be behind the wheel of the No. 91 Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing, a team that fields full-time entries for drivers Ross Chastain (No. 1 Chevrolet), Shane van Gisbergen (No. 88 Chevrolet), and Daniel Suarez (No. 99 Chevrolet).
With over 25 years in North American open-wheel racing, Castroneves has achieved remarkable success. Beyond his well-known Indy 500 victories, he has tallied 25 wins in the NTT IndyCar Series and six in the former Champ Car Series, competing continuously since 1998. Overall, he boasts an impressive total of 94 podium finishes across both racing series.
Despite his accomplishments, Castroneves had not previously raced in NASCAR, although he does have some experience with stock cars. He participated in 16 IROC races between 2002 and 2005, achieving a best finish of second at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Although the IndyCar series does not include races at Daytona, Castroneves is familiar with the famed track, having won the Rolex 24 at Daytona sports car event three times, with his latest victory in 2023.
Trackhouse has been eager to bring Castroneves to the Daytona 500 for several years through its “Project 91.” This initiative, launched by Trackhouse owner Justin Marks, seeks to entice renowned drivers from other motorsport disciplines to compete in a premier NASCAR race. Kimi Räikkönen, the 2007 Formula One world champion, was the first driver associated with this project, making his debut in 2022 at Watkins Glen International.
Now, Castroneves is ready to participate in the Daytona 500, just a few months before his 50th birthday.
