Houston Texans Deal Running Back Cam Akers to Minnesota Vikings

Houston Texans Trade RB Cam Akers to the Minnesota Vikings

Running back Cam Akers is heading back to Minnesota.

The Houston Texans have reached an agreement to trade Akers to the Vikings, as announced by Minnesota on Tuesday night. In this transaction, the Vikings will also obtain a conditional seventh-round pick for 2026, while the Texans will receive a conditional sixth-round pick in the same year in return for the running back.

This marks the second consecutive season that the Vikings have made a trade for Akers.

Last year, Minnesota acquired Akers from the Los Angeles Rams. He played six games for the Vikings in 2023, rushing for a total of 138 yards on 38 attempts.

Akers was signed by the Texans in the most recent offseason.

A product of Florida State, Akers was originally selected by the Rams as a second-round pick in 2020. He participated in 30 games for the Rams, starting in 15 of them. Akers suffered an Achilles injury before the start of the 2021 season but made an impressive return in Week 18 of that year, playing a role in the Rams’ Super Bowl LVI success.

What Role Will Cam Akers Have with the Vikings?

Akers will provide additional depth to a Minnesota backfield that currently lists Aaron Jones as the starting running back. Jones recently dealt with a hip injury in Week 5 but the concern surrounding it is minimal. Akers is expected to step in as the No. 2 running back.

Familiarity with Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell’s system should facilitate a smooth transition for Akers.

The 25-year-old running back boasts 1,728 rushing yards, 12 rushing touchdowns, along with 42 receptions for 336 receiving yards and two touchdown catches over 41 games in his career.

The Vikings, boasting a 5-0 record, are enjoying their best start since 2016.
