Mike Woodson’s Future with Indiana Basketball: Coach Expected to Retire Post-2025
It seems that Mike Woodson’s time as the head coach at Indiana might be coming to a close.
Currently in his fourth season leading the Hoosiers, Woodson is reportedly in talks about resigning and retiring after this season, according to several sources on Thursday. ESPN’s Pete Thamel has also stated that he is unlikely to return to coach Indiana next season.
His plans are said to include finishing out the current season.
If Woodson were to be dismissed, his buyout would amount to $8.4 million, although this can be settled in installments to ease the financial impact on the program.
This news arrives as the Hoosiers struggle, holding a record of 14-9 and 5-7 in Big Ten competition. Indiana recently fell behind 19-2 within the first few minutes of a game against Wisconsin on Tuesday.
“We’re just not a tough team right now,” Woodson expressed following the defeat. “We’re not. Mentally, we lack toughness.”
A former first-round draft choice from Indiana, Woodson has an overall record of 77-49 with the Hoosiers after Tuesday’s loss. During his first two seasons, he successfully guided the team to the NCAA tournament, but they failed to progress past the first weekend in both instances.
“It’s not rocket science,” Woodson commented after the loss to Wisconsin. “At this point, we are in a tough spot. We’re not playing our best basketball; we show glimpses of improvement. I think in the last three games leading up to tonight, we performed well, although we came up short.
“If we could have won one or two of those, it would have boosted our confidence. I need to devise a strategy to help these players regain their confidence and see where things lead from there.”
Before taking the helm at Indiana, Woodson served as an assistant coach for the NBA’s New York Knicks. He also had head coaching roles with the Knicks (2012-14) and the Atlanta Hawks (2004-10) and averaged 14 points per game during his 11-year playing career.
Woodson’s inaugural college coaching position has not unfolded as anticipated, especially considering Indiana’s recent struggles.
Unless there is a remarkable turnaround this season, it appears the Hoosiers will begin searching for a new coach come offseason.
