Implications of a TikTok Ban on CapCut: Insights into the Video Editing App

What will happen to CapCut if TikTok is banned? Understanding the video editing tool

The popular short-form video application TikTok might become inaccessible for users in the U.S. this week, but it isn’t the only platform potentially facing restrictions.

If TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, does not divest itself of the app by Sunday, January 19, the platform could be prohibited in the U.S. Last spring, President Joe Biden signed a law poised to enforce this ban due to rising fears that TikTok could be sharing user information with the Chinese government. If the ban takes effect, TikTok would be classified as illegal for distribution on U.S. internet hosting services and within app stores.

However, TikTok is not the only service owned and managed by ByteDance. Another significant platform is CapCut, a video editing tool. As the deadline approaches, creators who rely on both CapCut for editing and TikTok for sharing are increasingly worried about their content creation options.

Here’s what you should know about CapCut and the potential impacts of a TikTok ban on the software.

What is CapCut?

CapCut is a free video editing application launched by ByteDance in the U.S. in 2020. It is available for both mobile devices and desktop computers, and users can access it through the CapCut website.

As of Thursday, CapCut was the second most downloaded app for photos and videos in the Apple App Store, right behind Instagram, and it had surpassed 1 billion downloads on the Google Play Store.

Would CapCut face a ban if TikTok is banned?

While CapCut is not specifically mentioned in the Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Control Applications Act, which aims to impose the TikTok ban, the legislation does reference “any other applications or services developed or provided by ByteDance.” This implies that CapCut might be impacted as well.

As of Thursday, neither TikTok nor CapCut had provided a comment when approached for feedback by YSL News.

Another rising social media platform may also face a ban.

Lemon8, another app owned by ByteDance, is also at risk of being banned in the U.S. come Sunday.

Labeled as a “lifestyle community,” Lemon8 has been heavily promoted by TikTok as a potential alternative platform. As of Thursday, it has achieved the status of the top downloaded lifestyle app in the Apple App Store and has accumulated over 10 million downloads on the Google Play Store.
