In Memory of Lives Lost: A Wisconsin Community Unites After Tragic School Shooting

‘Dear friend.’ A devoted reader: Community in Wisconsin grieves over school shooting victims

MILWAUKEE — A community in Wisconsin is grieving the tragic loss of a student and a teacher who were killed earlier this week during a shooting at a private religious school, causing deep sorrow throughout the closely-knit community and across the nation.

The victims have been named by the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office as Rubi Patricia Vergara, 14, and Erin M. West, 42. Both lost their lives at the Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, where Vergara was a freshman and West served as a substitute teacher coordinator, based on the information from the school’s staff directory.

“We are heartbroken over these losses,” stated the school in a message to NBC News.

The identities of Vergara and West were disclosed on Wednesday evening following their forensic autopsies. Early reports indicate that both fatalities were due to injuries caused by a firearm, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Here’s what we have learned about the victims:

Rubi Patricia Vergara, 14

Vergara, who resided in Madison, had been a student at the school since kindergarten. Her obituary notes that she was passionate about reading, art, singing, and playing the keyboard in her family’s worship band.

She had a special connection with her pets, a cat named Ginger and a dog named Coco, as highlighted in her obituary.

According to a statement from Abundant Life Christian School to NBC News, Vergara was “often spotted with a book in hand” and she had talents in both art and music.

“However, it was Rubi’s devotion to Jesus that was most noteworthy, and she expressed this love with others through her dedicated volunteering,” the statement expressed. “Her presence will be profoundly missed by her teachers and friends.”

A funeral service for Vergara, which will be available to watch live, is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at City Church in Madison. People can visit the church starting at 9 a.m. until the service begins on Saturday.

She will be laid to rest at Roselawn Memorial Park.

Erin M. West, 42

West, who lived in DeForest, worked at the school as a substitute teacher for three years before moving into a full-time role as a coordinator for substitute teachers at Abundant Life Christian School, according to sources.

According to the school’s announcement, the community is better off thanks to West’s contributions.

“She infused our staff and school family with her passion for Jesus and compassion for others, always offering a hug and a smile,” the statement noted.

West earned her early education degree from Kennesaw State University in Georgia in 2005. The university expressed its “sincere sympathies to her family, friends, and everyone grieving this tragic loss.”

“We are extremely saddened by the unexpected passing of Erin West, a KSU graduate whose life was cut short by an act of pointless violence,” a university representative commented.

“It feels inadequate to express my grief. A beloved friend lost her life on Monday. Erin was a true treasure and blessing in our lives,” friend Jenny Matthews wrote on Facebook. “I cherish the moments spent together over the years — countless Bible studies, raising our children, serving at church and school, campfires, shared meals, birthday celebrations, choosing paint colors, exchanging recipes, and praying for others.”

A memorial service for West is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Monday at Doxa Church in Madison, and it will be available for live streaming.
