Intense ALCS Game 5: Stanton Launches Late Home Run as Yankees Battle Guardians

Yankees vs. Guardians live score updates: Stanton home run late in dramatic ALCS Game 5

In a postseason where getting outs has become a challenge, the New York Yankees are just 27 outs away from the World Series.

Tonight, the Yankees face off against the Guardians in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series. The Yankees lead the series 3-1 and are sending Carlos Rodón, who won in Game 1, to the mound. The Guardians are countering with Tanner Bibee.

This matchup will likely hinge on the performance of the bullpens. Cleveland’s closer Emmanuel Clase has struggled against the Yankees in the last two games, and though the Yankees secured victory in one of those games, their own closer, Luke Weaver, faced difficulties in Game 3. He should be ready for action tonight in case the Yankees clinch the pennant.

Cleveland, however, is keen to turn the tables and secure a trip back to New York for a possible Game 6 on Monday night.

Stay tuned for updates from Saturday’s game:

Giancarlo Stanton goes deep to tie the game in the sixth

While the Cleveland Guardians managed to contain Aaron Judge effectively, Giancarlo Stanton proved yet again why he’s a force to be reckoned with in the New York Yankees’ lineup.

Stanton continued his incredible postseason performance by launching a massive two-run homer in the sixth inning, tying the game with a shot that soared off his bat at 117.5 mph.

Tanner Bibee was having a solid outing, retiring 11 of the last 12 batters he faced before a couple of singles from Gleyber Torres and Juan Soto led to a brief pitching visit. After inducing a ground-ball double play from Judge, Bibee found himself in a tough spot against Stanton, but even after going down 0-2, Stanton worked the count full and then delivered a hanging slider into the stands, driving it 446 feet to make it a 2-2 game.

This was Stanton’s fifth home run of the postseason and 16th career postseason home run, giving the Yankees a fighting chance to finish the ALCS in five games.

Guardians lead 2-0 after five innings

Tanner Bibee, who struggled in his first meeting against the Yankees, stepped up with a crucial performance for the Cleveland Guardians, preventing any runs through five innings.

He pitched five innings without giving up any runs, striking out five batters and keeping the Yankees off balance with 10 consecutive outs at one point. Steven Kwan’s single brought in another run, giving the Guardians a 2-0 lead at the end of five innings.

With Cleveland’s bullpen clearly worn from the previous games, Bibee needed to keep the innings rolling to relieve some of that pressure, and he did just that. Meanwhile, Yankees starter Carlos Rodón exited after 4 ⅔ innings, putting the advantage in favor of Cleveland.

Bo Naylor’s hit gives Guardians the early lead

The Cleveland Guardians tapped into familial ties to grab an early lead in Game 5, relying on the Naylor brothers.

Bo Naylor capped off a long 10-pitch battle against Carlos Rodón by hitting a double into the right-field corner, scoring his brother Josh from third base to give the Guardians a 1-0 advantage against the Yankees.

While it is still early in the game, the Guardians are showing promise. Rodón has thrown 40 pitches in two innings, while Bibee has kept the Yankees off the scoreboard in the first two innings.

Yankees’ third base coach gets Torres thrown out in the first

Gleyber Torres started the game strong with a single, followed by a double from Juan Soto. However, third base coach Luis Rojas signaled Torres to head home, where he was thrown out by a precise throw from Guardians’ second baseman Andrés Giménez, with catcher Bo Naylor applying the tag.

After hitting both Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm to load the bases, Bibee managed to get Anthony Rizzo to fly out to left field, stranding all the runners.
